GBC Workers Still Want Board Dissolved

Workers of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) have piled pressure on the National Media Commission (NMC) for a permanent dissolution of the current board over allegations of mismanagement.

Most of the workers gathered at the entrance of the corporation at Kanda in Accra on Wednesday August 3 to protest against the Board’s continued stay in office.

Clad in red arm bands, the workers vowed to continue their protests until their concerns are addressed. Chairman of the GBC Divisional Workers Union Michael Allotey later addressed a news conference and stated that the state of affairs at the nation’s premier broadcasting house had degenerated.

“Things have gone bad under the watch of this board, which is not interested in our core work of news gathering, production, dissemination of public information, entertainment, education, and social mobilisation. We wish to remind the NMC to withdraw its appointment board without delay if it wants industrial peace at GBC,” he stressed.

He underscored the need for an audit and scrutiny of the corporation’s Internally Generated Funds (IGF) since the board was inaugurated. “We strongly ask the NMC to direct this board to give the whole world a full disclosure of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2015 AFCON contract and proceeds vis-à-vis expenditure.”

A worker who spoke with Class FM’s Ridwan Karim Dini said there were inadequate chairs at the newsroom. “There are some officers who sleep on the floor in the course of duty. The make-up section does not even have powder; the young ladies have to dip their hands into their purses to buy make-up kits to run the place. Go to our studios, they are leaking, nothing is working. Even America is still maintaining VOA, go to Britain, you dare not touch BBC, so why do we want to kill ours. We say that the marriage of GBC and its board has come to an end,” he added.
