Some unidentified group of men Monday morning besieged the Tema-end toll booth of the Accra-Tema motorway and allegedly prevented commuters from paying tolls.

The group, said to be numbering about 60 allegedly looted the booths of collected tolls.

According to the Tema Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Juliana Obeng, the police have managed to restore calm to the area.

Speaking on Citi FM, ASP Obeng said, “As I speak to you situation here at the Ashiaman toll booth on the Tema end of the motorway is very calm. At the time we got here the situation was such that people were just going through the toll booth without even paying.”

“At the time we got the information we quickly deployed men and we had very senior officers to make sure that we bring the situation under control. Honestly when we got here it was a bad situation but as I speak to you now the situation is very much under control.”

ASP Obeng however could not give information about the identity of the group but some reports indicated that the group are members of the Invisible Force, a vigilante group associated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“Unfortunately we do not know. We can just say that they are a bunch of youth from where we are yet to establish,” she explained.

She further cautioned the youth in the area to stay away from attacking and vandalising properties since they belong to the state.

“Let me send a word of caution…I beg the youth in Tema, this is government property. Even if it is for an individual it is still on the lands of Ghana and so there’s no need for takeover. If there is any reason to take over it is important that you go through the right processes, the right channel.”

She also indicated that the police were yet to make any arrests.
