The hopes of Teacher Trainees to get their utility bills paid by the government have been dashed following a decision by the Ministry of Education to stick to its earlier plans.
The Ministry of Education led by the Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh had resolved not to pay the utility bills of Teacher Trainees following a meeting with the leadership of the Conference of Principals.
In the said meeting, it was agreed that the Feeding Grant and Utility bills should be deducted at source from the Teacher Trainees’ allowances when restored in September 2017.
The said decision was revealed when the Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh during a stakeholders meeting held on April 12, 2017, at the conference room of the Ministry of Education.
The meeting Kasapafmonline.com understands was attended by the Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, his deputy, the Chief Director of the Ministry of Education, the Director-General of Education and the leadership of the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana.
Sources say the Teacher Trainees see the decision of the Ministry of Education as a stab in the back since they had earlier been assured by the Chief Director of the Ministry of Education at a meeting held between the two parties in March, 2017, that government would absorb their utility bills.
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh when contacted over the issue said the government will continue with the practice as done in the past where the government will pay the allowance due the Teacher Trainees and the Principals of the Colleges of Education will deduct their feeding fees and utility bills at source.
“Government can’t give allowance and still pay feeding in utility bills,” he noted.
The website is reliably informed the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana are meeting over the issue and will issue a communiqué to the general public when the said meeting comes to a close later on Sunday, April 30, 2017, in Sunyani.

Education i believe is not for free. EEEEiiii, u are demanding for an allowance and expect the govt to feed you and pay utility bill as well. That is absolutely hogwash!!!!!!!
"Robbing Peter to Pay Paul" If you don't think before you vote!!! Heheheheiii!!!!!!!!!!
That's is why wards of average men dont attend abang school. If supposed teachers could not decode a cheap propaganda and realities. These are the crop of leaders we get. ***barred word*** and reap what you planted, welcome to realities
When you closed your eyes to realities in face of cheap political propaganda, you learn from mistakes. When NPP was in opposition, they were promising heaven on earth and unfortunately these trainees also followed them sheepishly to vote for them. Now that they face with reality, they are running away from their promises. As for you trainees, I pity you. The battle has just began. Trainees must keep quiet and enjoy what they voted for.
Don't bring in your ndc nons*nse. NPP were desperate like ndc were in 2008,do you think Ghana is for you? The difference between NPP and the ndc is the teacher trainees will see their allowance after the deduction. What sensible thing did the ndc have to help the people? It is logical for the allowance to be paid and the principals deduct the feeding grant and the bills at least something will be left for them to enjoy unlike the ndc loans they had to pay after school .Don't bring your JM family, friends and cronies yen kye ndzi government.
I am surprise people are angry with the demands of the teacher trainees, This is what happens when you put logic aside because of politics. To me JM reasons for taking off their allowance was justifiable and instead of us approaching it logically we decided to play politics with it. Now we are in power and we are struggling to pay. To be fair I think the NPP was too desperate for power and hence the free offering was too much. But I wish all well meaning Ghanaian can read meaning into the effect and sustainability of all these policies especially the freebies and prevent its implementation.
How can teacher trainees ask for more than what they deserve? Is it deliberate or just to tanish the image of govt.? Pls be content with what you have got and say thank you to the Minister and the prez to instate this allowance, I rest my case
Where in this world will you be given an allowance, feed you and pay your utility bills? Feel free to stop the schooling if you are not given. Or when you come out to the world of work, ask your employers to pay you and also feed you and pay your utility bills.
