Feminist group Pepper Dem Ministries has dismissed claims that cooking for one’s husband is slavery.
The group said it doesn’t share this opinion and does not align with it nor endorses it.
They said a comment by one of their members advising husbands not to set standards for other women based on choices made by their wives was taken out of context.
The group’s statement comes on the back of public backlash where some people questioned the training given to these ladies behind Pepper Dem Ministries.
A member of the group is purported to have said ‘cooking for one’s husband’ is slavery.
But in a statement signed by the Communications and Media Team of the group on Monday February 26, 2018, it said, ‘We wish to reference one particular angle which has been falsely attributed to PDM. This is that cooking for your husband is slavery and those who do so are slaves. We wish to categorically state that PDM has never made this statement, doesn’t share this opinion and does not align with it nor endorses it’.
PDM added that it has members, supporters and allies who support their homes and take delight in cooking for their families.
The group entreated media houses to act professionally and check stories before they run amok.
‘We would like to entreat media houses to act professionally and check stories before they run amok with it and create storms out of tea cups and send the whole country on a wild goose chase with time that could have been used profitably to pursue progressive gender conversations,’ it said.
Read details of Pepper Dem Ministries’ statement:
Statement by Pepper Dem Ministries on the wrongful attribution of statement “cooking is slavery”.
In the last few weeks, there have been discussions on social media, television and radio pertaining to cooking from different angles.
We wish to reference one particular angle which has been falsely attributed to PDM. This is that cooking for your husband is slavery and those who do so are slaves. We wish to categorically state that PDM has never made this statement, doesn’t share this opinion and does not align with it nor endorses it.
Below is the statement which we believe has been twisted by propagandists on various media platforms:
“If you want to praise your slaving or hardworking or loving wife, whatever adjective you find suitable, pls go ahead without suggesting that she defines what womanhood totally entails.”
To help clarify the meaning of the post in question, we’d like to share some definitions:
A. “SLAVING” defined from the Urban dictionary is
i. Putting in overtime hours to get work done when you are getting paid on salary. And thus working for free.
B. “SLAVERY” defined on Google
i. Is the practice or system of owning slaves. or
ii. a condition of having to work very hard without proper remuneration or appreciation.
Clearly, “slaving”and “slavery”are not synonymous, plus the contextual meaning of slaving used in the sentence doesn’t suggest that cooking is slavery not to mention that cooking for your husband or family is slavery.
If you have followed us keenly, PDM’s goal is to promote choice, agency, balance and fairness. PDM has members, supporters and allies who support their homes and take delight in cooking for their families.
We believe that our member’s post suggesting that people shouldn’t use the choices their wives make to set standards for all other women has been taken out of context and a storm created unnecessarily out of this.
As an organization, we understand that adults can and should take decisions that work for them and also honour the dignity of both parties.
As we approach the International Women’s Month, we ask that we all work for progress and build both women and men to treat each other with dignity, especially to make commitments to train our daughters and sons for the challenging dynamics of the future in order to be useful in all spheres of their lives.
We would like to entreat media houses to act professionally and check stories before they run amok with it and create storms out of tea cups and send the whole country on a wild goose chase with time that could have been used profitably to pursue progressive gender conversations.
Media houses and people who do not agree with us must desist from these propaganda.
We are always available to confirm any statements we make to the press whenever they do their checks on the news of the day
Thank you.

Shame on you PDM ladies! Henceforth I cease following you. Even I heard you on your show pointing out the struggles women go through and the bit about the hairdresser one of you claims has to cook and wash for her husband and still go to work. Can't you take a stance and keep to it? I also heard you mention on a station after Ebony's death that any parent who has their child's role model being Ebony is a failed parent. What is wrong with you ladies? Stop confusing us...same ladies who claim the Gambaga witches returning home isn't on your list and asking another group to take that up. Stop confusing the young women in Ghana, one minute you are gender advocates the next you are condemning your own. Stop confusing the young women in this country. Won't let my daughter listen to you. You ladies sound like a bunch of arrogant, intolerant people preaching the right message but using a different approach that is just not right. My advice, restrategise and come back stronger. Stop using International women's day as an excuse. You've lost your significance in this country. Restrategise and come back stronger!
Disappointed, bitter loners who think loneliness is freedom. Pepper yourself at night.
this is a clear afterthought after they were soundly beaten at their debate with afia pokua of sugar dem on BBC. why didn't their rep on bbc distance them from the statement then? they had a good cause, but they have lost the battle due to poor issue framing. proper and effective issue framing is basic for successful advocacy. they just didn't know, and have lost the battle. period!!
USED R.A.G.S. THIS LADIES ARE LIKE THE CHOP BAR BOWLS USED BY EVERYBODY. NONE ENTITIES. LESBIANS.
As a matter of fact it is a free world and anyone can join any group if they so choose to do so.These women are mostly frustrated women who cannot catch the attention of serious men nor hold that attention for long if they do.Normal women in normal relationships love, adore and understand their men,and those men never for a second think their women are slaves. They see their women as partners sisters and soul mates. That is how normal relationships work.As for these women ,the name they have chosen for their group alone gives them away.Nobody has to ;pepper 'any one in life. It's a live and let live situation. We must love and cherish our wives. These women;I know most of them cry themselves to sleep most nights.
Are they men or women? They look like Nigerian Super Eagles team which played in 2010 world cup in South Africa! They've been living in America and Europe for less than 15yrs and they are already acting white. A bunch of less-bians
Anybody who doesn't want to listen to what the Pepper Dem women have to say can always move on to the next story. Sitting behind computers and making up stories about them and abusing them just gives you guys away: you're cowards, you hate women and you're afraid of change. It's allowed. Just stop clogging forums with your abuse. You may not like it, but these women have a big point. That threatens you and tickles your privilege. Too bad. You stick with your kind of woman who likes to be treated like a doormat and leave other people to lead their lives and try to improve the lives of other young people.
who will give these ***barred word***'s the permission to even run a group in Ghana? pepper Dem fo) nyinaa maame tw3 one by one!
Please what about the part that says "i know you are smart enough to see that your wife does not use her ***barred word*** to cook or order food". When it comes to the media, when this issue was being discussed on Joy fm, the host announced that PDM were called, but they refused to comment.if this is true, it will be unfair to say the media should act professionally and check stories before they run amok, if they have done that and you refused to comment.Don't you think so?
So why "PEPPER THEM" as a name
