Angry residents of Adenta blocked the Madina-Adenta Road on Thursday afternoon after a female student of the West African Senior High School (WASS) was knocked down by a taxi cab and died on the spot.
The residents burned car tyres in the middle of the road with billows of smoke clutching the atmosphere preventing vehicular movement on the 100km/hr speed limit road.
The angry residents pelted stones at the Police vehicles that brought personnel to restore calm as well as the Fire Service Tender, which came to douse the fire.
“No more deaths!” the residents chanted following the accident, which occurred at about 1600 hours.
The Taxi cab was said to be overtaking a vehicle and knocked the student down in the process.
The residents are angry not only for this accident but for the 193 lives that had been lost on the road this year.
The Police managed to calm the situation by dispersing the crowd with water cannon while the Personnel from the Fire Service doused the fire to ensure vehicular movement.
A driver, who uses the road and pleaded anonymity, said the residents did very well by blocking the road because the carnage on the road was getting worse by the day.
He complained that the footbridge had outlived its completion period.
Students and some individuals were seen weeping at the scene as residents threatened to continue to protest until the footbridges were fixed.
The victim was reportedly a student on the Gold Track, who had gone to register for the beginning of her academic calendar at WASS from Monday, November 12.
The Ministry of Roads and Transport has given the assurance that it would start the construction of the footbridge on the Adentan-Madina- Legon Road at the end of this month and complete by the first quarter of 2019.
It said the decision to construct bridges on the road had already been discussed and taken to Cabinet for approval, following which funds would be allocated to commence the project.
