The Ghana Police Service has expressed sadness over the fact that some persons looked on as a driver and his conductor physically assaulted a police officer.
A commercial bus driver and his conductor who have been arrested were captured in a video assaulting a police officer who was trying to query them for parking wrongly.
Speaking to this in an interview on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo' programme, Director-General of Public Affairs Directorate of the Ghana Police Service, ACP David Eklu expressed surprise that 'people looked on as a man in uniform was being assaulted'.
"I can’t understand how . . . we are saddened that a lot of people were standing there doing nothing. I thought the public would have assisted but they didn’t and it saddens us," he bemoaned.
According to him, "the people around could have helped in arresting the two (citizen's arrest) since they were doing something wrong; attacking a man in uniform or they could have dialed the police emergency number".
Meanwhile, the driver and his conductor will appear before court today.
According to the policeman who is with the Odorkor police station, he was performing his duties when he was attacked by the civilians for confronting them when they violated the road regulation act.
The Policeman revealed that he confronted the driver after he parked in the middle of the road to pick passengers which resulted in massive traffic.
He also stated that he went to the scene to solve the situation but met an accident between a motorbike and a private car and attempting to remedy the situation he was almost run over by the driver who parked in the middle of the road.
According to the policeman, he chased the driver on a motorbike which he managed to cross him and queried why he was driving recklessly.
This resulted in a heated verbal argument which the drivers and their mates decided to pounce on the policeman and ended up beating him mercilessly.

WHAT IS GOOD TO THE GANDER............THE POLICE DO CHOOSE AND PICK. IF IT IS THEIR OWN THE SHOW MAXIMUM CONCERN THAN THE PEOPLE THAT NEED THEIR PROTECTION FOR WHICH THEY ARE PAID FOR
Just like the police stood by while the invincible forces were shooting and beating up people during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.
When the brutalize civilians and nothing happens to them even when reported, do you think anyone will come to your rescue when someone is doing same to you? The police man who beat up the woman at midland savings and loan is back to work and your PRO has the nerve to tell the public they can go to court if the have a problem with the way the issue was handled internally by the police. with this kind of attitude do you think we care if one of yours is been beat up the same way??
POLICEMEN AND WOMEN ON THE KASOA-BAWJIASE ROAD ARE THE ROAD EACH DAY EXTORTING MONIES FROM ROAD USERS WITH IMPUNITY. WE HAVE COMPLAINED SEVERAL TIMES BUT THE POLICE ADMINISTRATION AND FOR THAT MATTER THE INTERIOR MINISTRY IS NOT DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT WAITING FOR SOMETHING TO HAPPEN THEN THEY WILL COME AND SAY "THEY WERE SAD THAT ONLOOKERS DID NOTHING". JUST DISCIPLINE YOUR OWN TO PROMOTE CIVILIAN-POLICE RELATIONS. ARE THE ADMINISTRATION SAYING THAT THEY ARE UNAWARE OF THE BRIBES THEIR MEN AND WOMEN TAKE FROM THE PUBLIC WITH BRAZEN FORCE EACH DAY AND WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO STEM THIS CANKER. IT IS A BIG SHAME TO THE IMAGE OF THE SERVICE BUT THEY JUST DON'T CARE. THEIR POCKETS MATTER MORE TO THEM THAN IMAGE.
It is not true people were just looking on without coming to the rescue of the police. In the video I saw, people were trying to help, one was trying to pull the officer away, but it just did not work because the fight was too brutal. But here is the problem in Ghana. we use authority to suppress people. Witnesses confirm that it was the officer who jumpped on the car at the driver's side and gave him such beatings. is it legal to beat up a driver behind the steering wheel? We are not talking about that. We are concerned about the officer who was beatten. the driver and his boy have been arrested and would be dealt with. How do we stand up to a police officer who is trying to extort money from us? the matter is that the officer is always right. give him whatever he demands to avoid any exchange, because in the event of any trouble such as this, the officer is guitless and you are condemned. Pathetic
what about the ple who have been assaulted by the police? I said it before that soon ple will start ganging up and beating these security ple. both the military and police are us3l3ss when alone but the act as if they are van dame when in group. tell ur officers to stop beating up innocent citizens.
What were you expecting the people around to do? When the people in the country loose hope or has no trust in the police this is what happens. Tell Kennedy Agyarpong to appear before court for asulting a commander before sending those two people for court.
I am surprised a supposed police man did not have the skills to quickly deal with these two youngsters. The police man is not fit. He should be withdrawn and sent for training, thus if the police service even train their men. SERIOUSLY GH Police train you men properly thus all.
It is unfortunate the police is talking about this.Did his fellow officers save the lives of journalist that were beaten last week when a police officer run into Ghanaian times vehicle?Did his men save journalist that were assaulted some months back?Hypocrisy.
I am thrilled by all the comments. Why is the police officer saying he was surprised? This is the beginning.
