Suspended Senior Lecturer of the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Yaw Gyampo says words of the 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln that “government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth” are not been practiced here in Ghana.
He explained that, ‘rich’ government officials in recent times are ‘milking’ what is meant for the poor and leaving them [the poor] in a despondent state.
“The unfortunate thing is that, interventions and works created by the government for the poor, people of power and influential people will jump the long queue for the poor and access their interventions,” he bemoaned.
His comment comes on the back of Auditor General’s report on Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) that exposed over 2,000 scholarships were awarded to undeserving people including politicians.
Speaking on NEAT FM’s morning show ‘Ghana Montie’ Prof Gyamfo noted that politicians are supposed to fund for their education among other things due to some benefits they get from government.
To him, “it’s rather unfortunate the rich is benefitting than the poor because of their influence.”
Adding that, “This problem has been there since 1992. What is meant for the poor should be beneficial to the poor”
