Even in death, the body of a 49-year-old man will not know peace, as his family's lingering land litigation followed him to his grave.
Few hours after Theophilus Budu was buried at the Abokobi Boi public cemetery in the Greater Accra Region last Monday by the Akpoman family, the coffin containing the body was exhumed and deposited a few metres from the grave.
The traumatised Akpoman family, which suspects a disputant family, Boi family as responsible for the act, reported the matter to the Abokobi Police.
No one has been arrested yet.
Briefing the Daily Graphic in Accra last Thursday, the police said they were investigating circumstances surrounding the exhumation of the body.
However, preliminary police findings revealed that after the family had performed the necessary funeral rites for Budu, his remains were buried at the Abokobi Boi public cemetery on May 10, 2021.
Out of fear that a rival family litigating over the piece of land would react adversely to Budu being buried on the land, the family had some people keep vigil at the cemetery until midnight, before returning home.
That was an exercise in vain, as the next morning, the Akpoman family followed up to the cemetery only to find the casket used for the burial with the remains of their dead relative outside the cemetery.
According to the Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mrs Effia Tenge, the Abokobi Ayi-Mensah District Police Command received a report about the incident on May 11, 2021.
She said a patrol team was subsequently dispatched to the scene and the casket containing the body was conveyed to the police hospital morgue.
After preliminary investigations, the police invited the family of the deceased including the Boi family, which is the other party in the dispute.
The police said efforts were also underway to arrest those behind the exhumation of the remains.
