The 1st Lady of Ghana who was giving her keynote address at the 11th Edition of “Merck Foundation Africa Asia Luminary”, held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania noted that even though her husband, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo will be handing over in 2025, her Foundation will continue to champion the interest of females and children in Ghana.
"Let me take a moment to say goodbye to all of you. My husband's term of office ends on January 7, 2025. I have been blessed and privileged to be the first lady of my dear country Ghana. To me the position was an opportunity to serve my people and make a difference. I was able to do that with the support of my husband, Ghanaians and partners like Merck Foundation. So I leave a fulfilled woman but I also know, I will miss all of you, but let me assure you that the Rebecca Foundation will continue to work in the interest of females and children in Ghana" she assured.
Merck Foundation partnership
Rebecca Akufo Addo asserts that her partnership with Merck Foundation has significantly strengthened Ghana's healthcare capacity, transformed patient care, broke infertility stigma, and actively promoted girls' education.
"I could not have asked for a more worthy partner. Thank you Merck Foundation. Merck Foundation has allowed us to access new resources, knowledge and networks. Since 2018 Merck Foundation has provided 189 scholarships for local Ghanaian toxins in diverse and critical disciplines. The scholarship has made a substantial contribution to enhancing access to Equitable and quality Health Care Solutions in many underserved Specialties. It is truly transforming the landscape of patient care and health access and awareness in Ghana. The Merck Foundation, more than a mother Ambassador program has today gained a Groundswell of supporting Ghana. Ghanaians are being more open with infertility, seeking help and reducing stigma" she stated.
Through its partnership with Merck, Ghana has conducted several training sessions for the media to help raise awareness and give voice to those affected by sensitive social and health issues, such as infertility. This collaboration has significantly increased awareness of key social issues within Ghana.
"I wish to commend Merck Foundations more than a mother and promoting healthy lifestyle Awards for musicians, fashion designers, filmmakers, students and potential talents in these fields. So far, we have had more than 100 winners. We are proud of our long-term partnership with Merck Foundation and remain committed to continuing our close partnership with them" she added.

The 11th Edition of “Merck Foundation Africa Asia Luminary” was officially inaugurated by H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, the President of the United Republic of Tanzania together with Prof. Dr. Frank Stangenberg-Haverkamp, Chairman of Merck Foundation Board of Trustees and Senator, Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation, along with First Ladies of 15 Countries, who joined as the Guests of Honor and Keynote Speakers.
