People are seeing haunting images of faces in the flames that engulfed Notre Dame on Monday night - with one photo apparently showing Jesus in the inferno.

While heartbreaking photographs of the disaster at the ancient Paris landmark have stunned the world - some snaps of the burning structure may show more than they appear to at first glance.

One photo of hellish flames tearing through the 853-year-old cathedral has been said to show the silhouette of Jesus Christ in the embers.

Appearing to stand among the flames, the full-length figure can be seen amid the collapsed scaffolding that surrounded parts of the treasured building.

Lesley Rowan, of Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire, was among the first to spot the chilling apparition - and likened it to Jesus.

She told the Daily Record: "When I looked at this photo last night, I was really astounded by what I saw.

"When I look at it I see a silhouette of Jesus. I really see a vivid image.

"I shared it and asked for people's opinions - even my brother in Australia said it looks like Jesus."

The 28-year-old added: "I feel like it will bring comfort to people in Paris and all over the world at this sad time."

Others took to social media where they too made the staggering discovery.

Louise Blair wrote: "Looks like a figure of Jesus, or I am tripping?"

And Grant Mackenzie agreed, writing: "Yeah I saw it straight away - it's Jesus!"

FACE IN THE FLAMES

Meanwhile, another dramatic shot showing the moment the cathedral's beloved 300ft spire collapsed has also been cited by some.

The incredible image, which we used on our front page yesterday, apparently showed a menacing face staring at the crumbling tower.

Sun reader Lucy R wrote on Twitter: "Anyone else can see a freaky face in the yellow smoke on the left of the spire??"

Millions around the world watched in horror on Monday as the much-loved Parisian cathedral - hailed as the most beautiful in the world - was engulfed in flames on Monday.

Hundreds of brave firefighters managed to save Notre Dame's iconic twin bell towers and many of its prized treasures were rescued - but its spire was swallowed up by the blaze.

Initial theories suggest the fire - broadcast live on TV and witnessed by horrified Parisians, many of whom sang in sombre prayer - may have started accidentally in the attic where renovation work was taking place.
