A teacher of Gomoa Adumasi Junior Primary School in the Central Region has been arrested by the Nima Police for insurance fraud.
Thirty-three-year-old Daniel Arkorful was arrested while trying to collect GH˘2,500 as insurance claim and has therefore been charged for insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretences.
Narrating the incident to Daily Guide, the Nima Divisional Crime Officer, Superintendent Baffour Apenteng, said suspect Arkorful was a policy holder of Star Life Assurance Company. On February 11, 2011, the suspect applied to the company that his mother, Esi Assun, a beneficiary, had died.
The suspect was asked by the insurance company to prove the claim, so he consequently produced a medical certificate of the cause of death from the Agona Swedru Government Hospital, signed by one Dr Mark Marshall Avudzivi.
Based on the death certificate, the suspect was given an amount of GH˘1,000 as the mother’s death premium. Not satisfied with the money, the suspect again applied to the company in August this year that his wife, Comfort Bentum, a beneficiary, had also died.
He again produced a medical form written and signed by the same doctor at the Agona Swedru Government Hospital. He was to claim an amount of GH˘2,500 as premium. But investigations conducted jointly by the police and officials of the insurance company revealed that the wife was alive.
The wife was later found in their hometown, Agona Abodom, very healthy and going about her duties.
“It was later that we realized that the mother, whom the suspect claimed had died, was also alive,” Superintendent Apenteng said.
The crime officer added that checks at the Agona Swedru Government Hospital revealed that there were no records of the persons the suspect claimed had died. He was arrested at Agona Abodom on September 20, 2011 and would be arraigned soon.
