A NOTORIOUS ROBBER suspected to be in his early 30s, who has eluded arrest for many years and harassed innocent people in Kumasi, was shot dead on the dawn of Saturday after failing to cut off the head of a policeman with a sharp and long machete.

The suspected criminal, whose name was only given as ‘Lover,’ was killed when a policeman, who acted swiftly, shot him in the rib at the Ghana National Centre of Culture minutes after he had tried killing another cop during the Bob Marley annual show.

The body of Lover, which had a tattoo on the stomach with the inscription ‘I Am Living In A Crazy World’, was dumped at the Kumasi Central Police Station on Saturday around 6am.

The deceased, who normally conducted his illegal operations around the May 5 area in Asawase, Kumasi, had been linked to several high-profile robbery incidents in the Garden City in recent times. He was said to be on the police wanted list for his crimes but he always managed to escape arrest.

Lover, on Saturday around 3am, leading a group of gangsters numbering about 20 who wielded offensive weapons, besieged the Cultural Centre where they were robbed people that had attended the annual reggae legend Bob Marley’s show.

The policemen were called to the scene and before they could attempt to arrest the hoodlums, Lover, who was wielding a long machete, tried cutting off the head of a policeman who tactfully bent down to avert being hurt by the bloodthirsty goon.

Another policeman who was around, acted swiftly by shooting Lover in the right rib, killing him instantly.

A police source told DAILY GUIDE that seven more suspected criminals who were part of the gang that joined Lover in that operation were apprehended and are currently in police custody.

The source said Lover and his group were having a field day as they robbed innocent people that attended the show of their valuables including money and mobile phones.

He noted that the police, after receiving a distress call for help, rushed to the venue with the main intention of arresting Lover.

The source said the policemen were however forced to change their tactics for the operations when Lover, who was wielding a cutlass, tried to cut the head of one of the policemen in the operation.

According to the source, but for the alertness of the said policeman who managed to dodge, Lover could have cut off his head, adding that another policeman who realised Lover’s intentions shot him to death.

Lover is said to have been on the police wanted list in Kumasi following his robbery escapades.

The source added that Lover was linked to a robbery incident at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi last December soon after the Samuel Osei Kufuor testimonial match.

During that operation, Lover and his group, wielding offensive weapons including guns, robbed several people of their valuables including mobile phones and fled.

Lover was also linked to a robbery incident that occurred soon after the inauguration of the Jackson Park in Kumasi some years ago, where some innocent people were robbed but again he managed to escape arrest.
