A durbar of Chiefs and People of Agona Swedru meant to climax a week-long activities marking the Annual Akwambo Festival of the town last Saturday, turned sour for some among the spectators as the Chief of the town, Nana Kobina Botwe II, used the occasion to launch a vitriolic attack on the police and officers of the Agona West Municipal Assembly.

Nana Botwe told the thousands of people gathered at the durbar, including the Minister for Chieftaincy and Culture, Alexander Asum Ahensah, Deputy Local Government Minister, Stephen Ackah, the Municipal Chief Executive, Samuel Oppong and a host of Chiefs and dignitaries that, the police at post at Agona Swedru have been aiding and abetting crime in the town.

He mentioned the crimes in the town of which the police have been found to have complicity as drug trafficking and cyber crimes and lamented that, the situation is such that these criminals will soon overtake the town if care is not taken, posing great danger to its law-abiding citizens.

Amidst bewilderment, Nana Botwe disclosed that, some of these crimes are being committed with impunity in view of the fact that, they have the blessing of the police in the town. “Our town is on the verge of being taken over by miscreants and organized criminals dabbling in drugs and cyber crimes. Sadly, the Swedru police, who are paid by the tax payers to protect them, have woefully failed in their duties to protect us. Indeed, there is evidence to suggest that, some of these organized crimes have the tacit support and/or the complicity of some corrupt police personnel,” he charged.

The angry Nana Botwe called on the authorities present and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to immediately and unconditionally transfer all police personnel in the Swedru township, indicating that, it is disheartening to observe the police looking on unconcerned as crimes are being perpetrated with impunity.
