The Eastern Regional Manager of the Forestry Commission (FC), has blamed illegal mining and lumbering in the forest reserves as the major human activities that had devastated forest reserves and caused damage to many water bodies.
Mr Atta Owusu said these water sources served as drinking water to many people in the Region and beyond.
He therefore urged the media to be interested in the campaign for Greening Ghana and help the (FC) to educate and sensitise the public on the need to plant trees.
Mr Owusu said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in commemoration of the international forest day.
The theme for this year’s celebration is”: Forest and Energy.”
He said the choice of the theme for the celebration was to provide the opportunity to educate the public on the relationship between forest and energy, which were essential elements for livelihood of mankind.
