The late Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama whose tragic killing by a mob at Denkyira-Obuasi stunned the nation has also resurrected a frank discussion about lynching, mob justice, trust in the police and the menace of illegal mining also now as ‘galamsey’.
But who was Maxwell Adam Mahama?
According to his Facebook profile, he studied abroad at the University of Leicester where gained a Master’s degree in Security and Risk Management. He also attended the University of Ghana where he gained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and History. Before that he had attended the St John’s School in Sekondi-Takoradi in the Western Region for his secondary education. He also attended Akosombo International School.
He was the only son of his mum and leaves behind a mother, father, Barbara, his wife and two young children. He married Barbara, his wife in August 2012.
Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul submits that Captain Maxwell Mahama, in his thirties, was a leader of a platoon detailed to a mining company at Denkyira-Obuasi and was posted to the area about three weeks ago to relieve the Commander of the military personnel guarding a local mining company so the Platoon Commander can sit for an examination in Accra.
Mahama’s death tastes even more bitter when it emerged he was to be promoted to a ‘Major’ after successfully passing the examination, few weeks ago.
It is clear he loved his wife, the beautiful Barbara dearly rendering on Facebook that his greatest accomplishment was having her.

So, so loving husband. Barbra please take heart. RIP Capt. Max.
Even me - a man - cannot hold back my tears. I have not been able to work after hearing of this barbaric act so primitive. After reading this articles am so devastated that all I do is pray for God to grant him a real eternal rest and also provide for his family left behind. I dont know the captain but the whole nation stands in shock. Whence again shall this earth be blessed with such a wonderful gentleman who refused to kill others though he had a gun and succumbed rather to these brutes who terminated this angel sent to us from God. Rest in Peace my bro. The Lord knows best.
I'm still crying. This is so painful and Barbara,I pray that the love, strength and hope you give to others in need will be given to you and your children by the all knowing God. God bless and keep you.
Am still crying nd don't know what to say.
Oh, now I can understand a bit why he could have a gun and yet not used it and be over powered. He was such a religious, godly, and peaceful young guy. Sorry you have been maltreated this way. Rest at peace with your maker who also will take very good care of your loving wife and children.
Somebody is not telling us the truth. A fine soldier just murdered like this. All because some private interests need to be protected. God have mercy on us.
