Taskforce tasked with the oversight responsibility of the pending district level election in the Central Region was yesterday inaugurated in Cape Coast.

The taskforce made up of officers from the security services and the regional electoral commission is expected to plan, implement and monitor activities prior, during and after the elections.

Other members of the taskforce include representatives from the National Commission for Civic Education (N.C.C.E), Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and the transport officer of the Regional Coordinating Council.

The police would also intensify its highway patrol to ensure uninterrupted movement of Electoral Commission officials and materials.

Inaugurating the taskforce, the Central Regional Minister, Aquinas Tawiah Quansah, told members about their responsbilibilities including the need to ensure peace during the election.

The composition of the taskforce, he explained, were expertise who are well resourced in security and election matters and would manage any related issues.

The Central Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Ransford Moses Ninson, said members of the committee was ready to ensure an incident free election in the region.

He said the security agencies were ready to collaborate with the Electoral Commission and other stakeholders involved in the decentralisation process and urged the public to cooperate with the taskforce in its work.

The Deputy Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), Anthony Nyame told The Ghanaian Times on the sideline that all arrangements were already explained and his office had taken delivery of the ballot papers which had been in the custody of the police.

He said the materials would be transported to the various districts soon and distributed accordingly on election day.

Mr Nyame indicated that the E.C. has been working with the security agencies to identify potential flashpoints.

He appealed to the electorate not to stay at the polling centres after casting their ballot, since the polling centre was a restricted area.
