The Electoral Commission (EC) on Sunday started the limited registration exercise in all the districts in the country that would form part of the proposed new regions to be created.

The exercise is aimed at providing an opportunity for those who have attained the age of 18 after the 2016 general election to register and those who have not had their names in the voters register since 2012 to also do so.

The 11-day exercise, which began yesterday, September 16, 2018, will end on September 25, 2018.

From Tamale, the proposed Savannah and North East regions are to be carved out of the Northern Region.

The exercise is taking place in the Bole, Sawla-Tuna-Kalba, North, West and Central Gonja districts and the East Gonja Municipality that form the proposed Savannah Region.

In the proposed North East Region, the exercise is taking place in the Chereponi, Bunkpurugu, Yunyon and Mamprugu-Moaduri districts, West and East Mamprusi Municipalities.

The Deputy Northern Regional Director of the EC, Mr Emmanuel Abeam-Danso,  disclosed this in an interview with the Daily Graphic.

Eligibility

Mr Abbeam Danso said the exercise was open to all who had just attained 18 years and those who did not have their names in the register to get their names onto the voters register.

He said one needed a passport, a driving  licence and a National Identification Card (ID) and the old non-biometric voter ID card to register.

He added that those who did not have the above-mentioned documents to enable them register ought to get two guarantors who were registered voters living in their localities to guarantee for them to enable them to get their names into the voter’s register.

He cautioned political parties and residents against presenting people who were not qualified to register as well as the bussing of people who already had their names in the voters register to register again, adding that those who engaged in double or multiple registration would have their names deleted and be marked as having engaged in double or multiple registration.

Brong Ahafo

From Bechem in the Brong Ahafo Region,  the exercise announced by the EC has begun within the Ahafo and the Bono East areas in the BrongAhafo Region where referendum are expected to be held for the creation of new regions.

The exercise is taking place in six districts in the Ahafo area and 11 districts in the Bono East area.

At the start of the exercise, only few people were seen trickling in to register and the EC officials said the situation was so because it was a Sunday and many people had gone to church.

The Tano South Municipal Electoral Officer, Mrs Mavis Emefa Gyimah, told the Daily Graphic that with the exception of a little challenge about their printer, the exercise was very smooth.

As of 12:40 p.m. when the Daily Graphic visited the ECs office at Bechem, 16 people had registered.

Excitement of a new registrant

A 19-year old girl, Ms Gifty Frimpong, could not hide her happiness after receiving her voter’s identity card for the first time.

“I feel like a big girl now. I can now take part in national decisions and my opinion will now be respected,” she stated.

Ms Frimpong said she was looking forward to the referendum for the creation of the Ahafo Region.
