Managing Editor of the “Daily Searchlight” newspaper, Kenneth Agyei Kuranchie, has hit back at a member of the government’s Communication Team, Felix Kwakye-Ofosu, for claiming that the character of the New Patriotic Party (NPP’s) Presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo disqualifies him from seeking the highest office of the land,...
...saying but for the massive human rights advocacy spearheaded by Nana Addo, the NDC activist would not have had the platform to spew forth his “irresponsible” statements.
The newspaper Editor claims at a time when Ghanaians are calling on politicians to be civil in their political discourse and refrain from verbal attacks on their political opponents, it appears members of the NDC’s communication team are only bent on gleefully making Nana Akufo-Addo the subject of their vituperative attacks.
“From the days of Acheampong and Jerry John Rawlings, this man has fought for Ghana. He has led Ghanaians in demonstrations and had it not been him, a lot of people would have been arrested after airing their views on radio. This man laid down his life for people like Felix Kwakye to benefit from speaking freely on air,” he said.
The NDC activist is reported to have slammed the NPP flagbearer at a recent tour of the Volta Region organized by the youth wing of the party. Addressing the youth of the party in Ho, the regional capital, he is said to have described Nana Addo as a “wee smoker who would be an embarrassment to the country when elected President in the December elections.”
According to him, “Nana Akufo-Addo would always be of great concern to the NDC because his character does not qualify him to become President.”
“When the whole country is to be put in your hands to manage, you are expected to exhibit certain character traits. Our President has passed the test; Nana Akufo-Addo has failed the test several times…even before he begins to pick up nomination forms to contest in 2012, he is already disqualified…How can someone who wants to become president go and fondle another man’s wife? It is unthinkable. How can someone who wants to be President be said to be smoking wee. Can you imagine a situation where we elect Akufo-Addo as President of Ghana and then he is sent abroad to represent Ghana in an international conference? They go and open his hotel room and here he is smoking wee with smoke all over his head. It is going to be a major embarrassment for the country,” the NDC activist said.
Clearly angered by the pronouncements of Kwakye-Ofosu who is also an Oil and Gas Analyst and the Convener of the Research and Advocacy Platform (RAP), Ken Kuranchie, who was speaking on Oman FM, labeled him as a “political toddler”.
He accused him (Felix) of having benefitted from the “tax payers monies” which happened to be the used to sponsor his studies abroad and warned him against passing any outrageous and irresponsible comments.
“We have not educated you with our monies to make irresponsible statements against other people. What he said is irresponsible and it’s not indicative of someone who has had a proper upbringing or training. I would have loved to refer him to certain things but I don’t need to reduce myself to his level,” he said.
