Members of Friends of Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings (FONKAR), on Monday said that the registration and claim of the logo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) by Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings was ill-motivated.
It advised Mrs. Rawlings and other members of FONKAR across the country to put behind them issues that came up at the NDC National delegates’ congress in Sunyani, and rally behind President Mills’ administration to ensure victory for the party in December.
Addressing a press conference in Takoradi on Tuesday, a leading member of FONKAR in Western Region and Takoradi Constituency Propaganda Secretary of the NDC, Mr. Newman Kpogo, said the former first lady’s action could destroy the party.
He alleged that the former first lady had made moves to mobilize grassroots support, especially using FONKAR executives and members, for the formation of a new party in the country that would wrest power from the NDC.
Mr Kpogo expressed worry that the growing tension between the Rawlings' and the NDC Government was affecting the unity of the party.
He said though before the Sunyani NDC congress to elect a flagbearer for the party, two groups, FONKAR and Get Atta-Mills Endorsed (GAME) emerged from the party, it deepened internal democracy in the party.
Mr Kpogo said after the congress, which elected President Mills as the party’s flagbearer, Mrs Rawlings encouraged all party members including FONKAR, to work towards party unity for victory in December.
‘With this piece of advice given by the former first lady, we find it absolutely difficult to understand some actions taken by her, to the point of secretly registering and claiming ownership of the party’s logo,’Mr. Kpogo said.
He observed that in view of these happenings, the FONKAR in the region had decided to support NDC's principles of probity, accountability and development instead of parochial and selfish interest of individuals.
