The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Weija/Gbawe in the Greater Accra Region, Rosemund Comfort Abrah, has expressed grave concern over the perennial flooding in her constituency which she said leads to massive destruction of property, and even loss of lives every rainy season.

She expressed the concern in a statement made on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday about the flooding in most parts of her constituency, particularly Mallam Junction, GICEL Estates, Glefe and Wiaboman.

According to her, the Weija/Gbawe constituency, being a low lying area and also at the lower end of the Densu River, had been experiencing flooding every rainy season.
She pointed out that the spillage of the Weija Dam had compounded the situation.

Madam Abrah disclosed that a letter from the Ministry of Energy, dated November 19, 2010 and addressed to the Ministries of Water Resources Works and Housing as well as Roads and Highways, attributed the flooding in the area to the siting of the Total Filing Station at Mallam Junction.

She asserted that experts had advised that there should be a redesigning of the horizontal alignment of the drainage system at the area.

According to the MP, the experts also proposed that six bigger culverts should be built upstream to contain the rain water from those areas.

She told the DAILY GUIDE that the visit by the President to the flooded areas at Mallam Junction last Friday would not solve the problem and that the government must show more commitment in addressing the perennial flooding there and other parts of Weija/Gbawe constituency.

Contributing to the statement, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Nanton, Murtala Mohammed Ibrahim, said that bad planning of towns and cities had also contributed to perennial flooding in some cities and towns in the country.

According to him, the Town and Country Planning Department must be made relevant by metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies by involving the department in the planning of new settlements so as to forestall such occurrences.
