A group calling itself Konkonba Youth for Progress (KYP) has accused President John Dramani Mahama of disregarding them though they constitute the second largest ethnic group in the Northern Region.
According to the group, President John Mahama has sidelined Konkombas in the appointment of Ministers of states and Heads of Institutions.
“In spite of his about 88 Ministers and Deputy Ministers of State serving in the NDC government only one Konkomba, in the person of Mr. Bilijo Nayon was appointed as Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture.
However, after the recent reshuffling of his Ministers, Mr. Bilijo Nayon was removed.” In a press statement jointly signed by Jato T. Kennedy and Frank Bitafur Ijon, President and Secretary of the group respectively, the group alleged that Mr. Nayon was appointed Minister because he is an in-law to President Mahama and not because he is a Konkomba.
“We the Konkomba Youth for Progress is very worried and feel extremely disrespected and discriminated against, in the distribution of government portfolio as stated in article 34 (5) of the 1992 constitution” they stated.
They stated that Konkombas need to be respected and given recognition because the youth in the area are struggling to educate themselves in spite of the many challenges as such; there is the need to have someone whom they look up to as a role model and be inspired.
The group has therefore called on President John Mahama “to share the proverbial cake equally else we will also go the way others went and got their people reinstated at Ministers.”
