The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Madina constituency is indirectly holding a primary to determine which candidate from the party is fit enough to stand as a candidate for the impending district assembly elections in the area.

The action violates the district assembly law as the elections are supposed to be non-partisan. The Electoral Commission (EC), which is responsible for organizing elections in the country, had warned of the dire consequences if partisanship was introduced into the elections.

DAILY GUIDE learnt that last week Thursday, January 15, the party arranged a meeting at the Danfa Methodist JHS at 4pm which was later relocated to a location of the town popularly known as Kenkey House.

The purpose of the meeting according to a party source, was to get one of the two candidates Charles Kotei, a contractor by profession and Dzakpasu Mawuli Jesse to step aside so that it (NDC) could give its backing to the preferred candidate to stand and contest the assembly member position.

The paper gathered also that the holding of the meeting was not restricted to Danfa, but most electoral areas where the NDC has more than one of its members standing for the polls.

Mawuli Anang Awuma Kwasi, the third contestant, had stepped down following an alleged appeal by the constituency executives. He reportedly agreed to step down and give his support to Dzakpasu Mawuli.

The MP, Alhaji Amadu Sorogho, who sources said was expected to attend the meeting, was absent but some other party executives, led by a certain Baba, and the constituency secretary attended.

Before then there had been heated arguments among the supporters of the two candidates as shouts of No Mawuli No Vote! were heard all over the place.

The grassroots supporters of the party accused the executives of bias or taking sides to project Dzakpasu Mawuli Jesse against Choro Adams, the incumbent, on the grounds that the former was first to present his application to stand for the elections at the Madina party office.

The Danfa NDC executives were worried that the meeting, which was to be a closed-door one, was inundated by party supporters and other members.

Meanwhile, the executives are said to have given Dzakpasu Jesse Mawuli, a teacher at Pantang JHS and Chris Kotei a two-week ultimatum to decide who would step aside for the other.

Investigations however revealed that the executives in Madina were doing this by way of compensation to Dzakpasu, who contested for the position of constituency secretary but lost to the current holder.

A source has hinted that Chris Kotei on the other hand, has the endorsement of the traditional rulers of the town.
