Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia has described as "amusing", calls by some leading activists in the opposition party asking the government to pay arrears to road contractors.
Dr Bawumia told the "latter day saints" that the Akufo-Addo government has remitted half of the arrears incurred under the Mahama administration.
In July last year, National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP for Wassa East, Hon Isaac Agyei Mensah, who is also a former Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways in the erstwhile Mahama-led government, said the current administration has no excuse not to pay contractors and also improve road infrastructure in the country.
Quite recently at the NDC's 5th Unity Walk, former President John Mahama charged the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to pay debts owed government contractors.
“During the 2016 campaign, the NPP promised to pay monies owed contractors within its first 100 days after taking office. Till now the contractors have still not been paid,” Mr Mahama observed in an address to party supporters at Techiman in the Brong Ahafo region on Saturday, January 6.
But delivering an address at the opening of the 2018 New Year School at Legon, Dr. Bawumia noted that in just less than two years of the new government, the current administration has paid off significant arrears to tune of GH¢1.45 billion.
He recounted that the government inherited validated arrears for Statutory Funds, Capex, Compensation and Goods and Services, that were accumulated by the NDC government which amounted to GH¢3.1 billion.
Speaking to the gathering at the 69th Annual New Year School and Conference under the theme: “Job Creation for Accelerated National Development: The Role of the Private Sector”, the Veep stated that "in fact, in just one year we have paid almost half of the arrears accumulated by the NDC government while staying current on existing obligations".
According to him, the government stayed current on payments to statutory funds such as GETFUND, NHIS, DACF SSNIT, ROAD FUND, in 2017 while paying arrears inherited.
Taking a swipe at the "latter day Saints" who by inference are critics asking the government to pay arrears to contractors, saying "I find it amusing that some latter day saints are asking government to pay arrears owed to contractors after recklessly accumulating the arrears in the first place and not paying it themselves".

Bawumia should know that no Capital Expenditure has been taken in the one year in office
Mr kwabena you are very funny take them to court and stop talking , you see where did mR KOFI ADAM got his money from , then you later side you are not saying he can work to get that money.if you don't have any thing to say keep your mouth shouttttt
If NDC has arrears, then why don't you give the arrears to the NDC?
as for NDC the least said about them the better. what even annoys me the most is how you people stole our monies and you spent them on your friends and families. what do you take Ghanaians for?? What work does Kofi Adams do to be giving out loan of GHc 8000000 to somebody he himself calls a stranger? where did he get that colossal amount of money from. im not saying he cant worrrk to get that money but its questionable, very very questionable. inflation of projects, creat , loot and share, so what at all does Mahama and his appointees want in this world?
You are saying Mahama left money behind, and yet there were huge debts to pay? Why didn't Mahama pay the debts with that money, but only left it behind? Some of you support these politicians so blindly that even if they are killing the country, you still follow them. The truth is that all those corrupt NDC appointees who were syphoning the money have been removed from the positions. Opuni and co. Even Kofi Adams had had over 800,000 cedis to give to a stranger as a loan. And you are saying Mahama left some money behind. Now within one year that they have been removed, monies have accumulated enough to pay some of these debts. Get that into your head.
WHAT PREVENTED THE MAHAMA ADMINISTRATION FROM PAYING CONTRACTORS OWED MANY YEARS BEFORE DEPARTURE FROM POWER MAHAMA JUST RUN THE CONTRACTORS DOWN SO ITS WISE TO ACCUMULATE ARREARS HIGHLY INCOMPETENT MAHAMA HAD THE GUTS TO ACCUSE NEW GOVERNMENT OF NON PAYMENT OF HIS ARREARS OWED BY HIS GOVERNMENT, ***barred word*** AND NAIVE OF HIM AS EX PREZ
FUNNY BAWUMIA, WHERE DID NANA ADDO GET THOSE MONIES TO PAY? WHAT WORK HAS HE DONE DURING THIS ONE YEAR PERIOD HE ASSUMED THE SEAT? IF HE HAS PAID SOME DEBTS AS YOU CLAIMED THEN ITS MONIES MAHAMA ADMINISTRATION LEFT BEHIND. THAT'S WHY THEY THE NDC IS ASKING THE NANA ADDO ADMIN TO PAY CONTRACTORS. B'COS THEY KNEW THE CHUNK OF CASH THEY LEFT IN THE NATION'S COFFERS. SO BAWUNIA SHOULD BE QUIET AND DO THE WORK GHANAIANS HAD ENTRUSTED INTO HIS CARE AND STOP BECOMING THE PRO FOR NPP WHEN EVER THE NDC TALKS.
