The Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has called on the state to scrap car loans for Members of Parliament.
For him, the state must bear the full cost of providing means of transport for legislators.
According to Mr Bagbin, the loan to purchase vehicles places MPs at a disadvantage, compared to those in the Executive arm of government.
Speaking to Class News, Mr Bagbin, who is the Nadowli Kaleo lawmaker, called on the state to begin providing MPs with decent means of transport just like is done for Ministers, MMDCEs and other government appointees.
Asked if car loans for MPs should be scrapped, he said: “Without hesitation it should be scrapped completely. I’ll prefer that members of parliament will be supported by the state like Directors, Chief Directors, Deputy Ministers, DCEs, Ministers and others are supported. That is how members of parliament should also be supported because they are not into private business but into public business, a business of serving the people.”
“Government should provide for those (MPs) without any means of transport… why should the MP take care of his own transportation,” he quizzed.
The call has been backed by former Member of Parliament for Asikuma Odoben Brakwa, P.C Appiah Ofori, who said giving car loans to MPs makes life unbearable for lawmakers, past and present, since their take home pay after the deductions is nothing to write home about.

There should be a pool of cars. That should not be given any car after their term in office. infant the cars should be maintained and bidded for by the public and the returns topped up to buy new ones. We will not provide and after give it to you to take home. Apuu
Don't give anyone a car Bagbin has taken about 5 car loans he is now asking for a free car. God forgive them. Didn't u know the condition of service for MP's before contesting? U guys say u only want to serve moment u won then we should serve u. God punish all of u.
***barred word*** HEAD.TELL THEM TO SCRAP EX-GRATIA NOT CAR LOAN.YOU KNOW AS FOR EX-GRATIA YOU DON'T PAY BACK BUT CAR LOAN YOU WILL PAY BACK.OLD ***barred word***.
Since 1992, how many car loans has Bagbin collected? He has collected ex-Gratia every 4years and continue to collect. He should tell us which public official in GH collects ex-gratia every 4years? Bagbin is a greedy B who wants to become president. His corruption will be worse than Opana if given the opportunity.
They should be given transport allowance and not car loans.
Bagbin has been in Parliament since 1992.... He must tell us how many car loans he has taken. He has enjoyed ex-gratia several times... He has also serve as Minister in various ministries and used free govt cars..... Why is it that most NDC people are greedy? Other civil and public servants such as police, teachers, nurses are even looking for car loans and cannot even get. Scrap the car loans for MP and let them use their own money to take transport to work just like a teacher or a nurse does.
Your days in parliament are numbered.
