A flagbearer aspirant of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, is predicting only a one-term tenure for incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo.

In a new slogan he framed for the NDC, Spio-Garbrah said the NDC will certainly return to power.

“Let’s have this new slogan that you will repeat after me. When I say NPP, you will respond to one term. When I say Akufo-Addo, you say one term. And when I say NDC, you will say we are coming back.”

Spio-Garbrah further said the NPP had been a big disappointment to Ghanaians and as such must not be given another chance.

“We also know that the NPP are failing Ghanaians and we are all witnesses and victims of the high prices that we are suffering these days. Almost everything that you want to buy in Ghana today has gone up many folds. That is why it is important for us to remember that our objective is to mobilize ourselves and prepare ourselves to remove the NPP who are disappointing Ghanaians because they have made several promises and are not fulfilling,” he added. The NDC aspiring presidential candidate made the statement on Monday, at the 31st December revolution commemoration event held at Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region.

It was on the theme: “Deepening the core principles of good leadership for political governance.”

Spio-Garbrah used the opportunity to also advise supporters of other presidential aspirants to conduct their campaigns in a polite manner devoid of violence.

“As we move forward, it is important for everyone to remember that the contest of flagbearership is a contest of friends…it’s a family contest. We are appealing to supporters not to create any tension among the flagbearers,” he stated.

The annual 31st December Revolution commemoration event is to remember 31st December 1981, when former President Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings led a group of soldiers to topple the late President Hilla Liman’s government to form the Provisional National Defense Council (PNDC).

Over the years, the commemoration platform has been used by Rawlings, who is the founder of the NDC, to condemn corruption and bad governance at the national level and within his party, the NDC.

Some have also interpreted some of his past criticisms on the platform as an open condemnation of the NDC party especially when it was in power under the leadership of John Mahama.

About the 31st December Revolution

On 31st December 1981, former President Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings led a group of soldiers to topple the late President Hilla Liman’s government to form the Provisional National Defense Council (PNDC).

The PNDC was an amalgamation of the Armed Forces Revolution Council (AFRC) which on 4th June 1978, deposed the Supreme Military Council (SMC) II, and handed over power to Liman’s government after elections.

The PNDC steered the affairs of the country until 1992 when the country was returned to constitutional democracy.
