Former Acting General Secretary of the Convention People's Party (CPP), James Kwabena Bomfeh has admonished the National Communications Authority (NCA) to enforce the electronic laws of the country.
He was commenting on recent speculations that a government official had been arrested in the United Kingdom (UK) for smuggling 26 million pounds into the country, which turned out to be fake news.
Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah refuted the claims saying “no government official has been arrested in the UK. It is a total fabrication and we are clear in our minds that it is a fabrication by the NDC and it is part of their strategy for these last eight weeks where they will be churning out a lot of fabrication, lies, and fake audiotapes. We are clear in our minds that it is the NDC for one or two reasons. The first person to articulate it publicly is the Honorable Inusah Fusieni, an NDC Member of Parliament".
“They are the ones who are championing it and articulating it on their online media platforms including Radio Gold online. And now you can also find that there is a fake audiotape that purports to be a piece of international news broadcast on it which is being circulated since last night.''
Speaking to host Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo', it was apparent that James Kwabena Bomfeh is not only worried about the £26 million hoax but also the incessant dissemination of fake news and the cloning of websites to deceive innocent Ghanaians.
There are also reports that websites like Graphic Online and Ghanaweb have been cloned by some faceless entities to propagate false stories to the public.
The CPP General Secretary, also called Kabila, wondered why the appropriate authorities in cyber sector have slacked in enforcing the laws that govern internet activities.
He called on the NCA as a communication regulator to police the internet pathways.
He held that the communication regulators can jam the services of the cyber offenders, trace their whereabouts and apprehend them.
He believed arresting the perpetrators and ensuring they face prosecution will deter others from imitating their misconduct.
''There can never be freedom properly so if there are no regulations. In any society, you need order. An uncontrolled freedom - a freedom that's not regulated, freedom without limits - breeds chaos. That's what happens in the animal kingdom where everybody or anybody does as they please.
''NCA must be seen doing something about it...One of the best ways (antidotes) to fighting wrong is to punish the wrongdoers...The law must be made and be seen to be working'', Kabilla hollered.
