Alhaji Mohammed Shukurulah Bamba, a stalwart of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Northern Region, has appealed to party members to unanimously endorse vice President Dr (Alhaji) Mahamudu Bawumia as the party's 2024 presidential candidate.
He said Dr Bawumia was the only winsome candidate who could help the party to retain power.
"If we make a mistake and replace the vice president, there will be mass defections, especially from the North," he warned.
Alhaj Bamba told the GNA that Dr Bawumia was the brain behind the party winning the 2016 election and retaining the same in 2020, adding that it would be suicidal if he was not given the mandate to lead the party.
"Already some people have the perception that NPP never wants people of Northern extraction to lead the party. Such perceptions will be confirmed if Dr Bawumia is dropped just as happened to the late Alhaji Aliu Mahama," he explained.
"We are all witnesses to the role the vice president played in the campaign history of the NPP. Had it not been him, we would've been in opposition by now and we need to reward him by endorsing him to replace Nana Akufo-Addo," he said.
Alhaj Bamba said politics was about numbers and that Dr Bawumia had a large following nationwide, which members of the party must not underrate.
He said it was important for the leadership of the NPP not to lose grips on the North and that the surest way to maintain and increase votes from the Northern sector was not to abandon Dr Bawumia.
"Many of us will not hesitate to join other parties or stop active politics if Dr Bawumia is dropped. I am the founder of Bawumia Fun Club and a one-time NASARA aspirant and we have a lot of supporters across the board", he said.
"There are many of us who worked and are still working behind the scenes to always ensure victory for the party because of Bawumia and though our efforts had never been recognized, for the love for the party, we shall continue to give out our best," he said.
He claimed that it was only Dr Bawumia who could retain power for the NPP to break the eight-year term jinx in the country and asked those campaigning or endorsing other persons to have a second look at the situation since Dr Bawumia was the grassroots person and deserved to lead the party into the 2024 elections for victory.

Mass defection to where please. Let's stop this ***barred word*** threat which is not going to help the Party. Was there any defection when He Nana Addo contested President Kufour and lost. Was there any defection when Aliu Mahama as Vice President could win the primaries. Let's strengthen the party to win elections no matter who is the presidential Candidate. I hope General Secretary and Party Chairman have taken note of the threat from Alhaji Bamba we know in the party or probably pseudo name
you could talk about the importance of Bawumia to the party but not threats. after all when the party looses power, you would suffer more not me. let us campaign with good language and decorum but not threats. this is a democratic party with more akans so if you go on tribal lines, Bawumia would loose. you need to talk on the strength of Bawumia and not on his tribe.
Abomination for an asante to be a running mate to cattle shepherd.
It entails a lot of visionary leadership traits to enable you select competent people for specific positions which go a long way to help you produce the results that make the change you wish to benefit your people. Bawumia was a triumph choice that Nana made. And I bet, Nana, our dear President could foresee that remarkable competence in Bawumia. Oh, God see it through that, NPP as a party, is convinced to acknowledge the urgency to pair the two brilliant and hardworking personalities, Bawumia and Alan. Thus, Alan to vice Bawumia would be a brilliant choice to bring Ghana the development she so dearly needs. Then, both are playing a very critical and strategic role in Nana's administration in terms of working-hard to transforming the old colonial Guggisberg's economy. And indeed, remarkable strides are being chalked up. Bawumia had made his mark, he is performing competently. Therefore, he does not need any form of black-mailing or threats like mass defection into anywhere, to boost up his chances of wining any election.
Giving the party to one of these guys means you are asking us to be acid bombed like they did to Adams. Make an attempt to give the to them and you will see who they really are. After barwumia, they will still use violence to get another person from among them and we will be relegated to the background. If you don't know death look at someone sleeping.
This is one of the reason why it is dangerous not to chooose an akan to lead the npp. Just look at what our brothers up there have started doing. Can you imagine how our party will become under barwumia? Nana addo has not even spent six months of his second term, and our brothers are already misbehaving. Just last week youth from yendi were on demonstration to force nana addo to appoint Farouk Ibrahim or else. Ghana cannot be given into the hands of these troublemakers. Any attempt to elect him means npp will never be the same.
What did Bamba seek to achieve with this pronouncement?
If the NPP chooses Bawumia many of us at the southern sector will also defect from the party. Do you Bamba understand what democracy is? You can’t intimidate some of us with threat of defection because we also who support other candidates are many and will defect if our preferred candidate is not selected.
SUCH COMMENTS ARE NOT LIKELY TO INNURE POSITIVELY TO THE CANDIDATURE OF HE VICE PRESIDENT BAWUMIAH WHO HAS MADE HIS MARK ALREADY. WE DON'T NEED THE THREATS OF ALHAJI BAMBA TO CAJOLE PEOPLE INTO VOTING FOR DMB. STOP THESE CRUDE IMPERIAL MONKEY TACTICS IN ROUTING FOR THIS TALENTED AND INTELLIGENT YOUNG MAN. PLEASE ENGAGE IN CLEAN POLITICS, NOT VILE THREATS.
