Ghana’s ex-president, John Dramani Mahama, has stated that the youth in Ghana are losing their faith in the country’s democracy.
He explained that the main reason is that they do not get jobs after promises have been made during election campaigns.
“The danger we face is that our young people continue to lose faith in our democracy because then the point they make is democracy those not work for us why should I come out and vote”, he added.
The former president, therefore, urged the ruling government to work together with all stakeholders including the opposition NDC to find a solution to the menace of unemployment in the country.
According to the ex-president, the issue of employment is a serious problem that has confronted not only the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government but also past governments including his NDC (National Democratic Congress) administration.
John Mahama who was speaking during a thank you tour in the Upper West region explained the reason why unemployment continues to be an issue is that the number of jobs created yearly far outweighs the number of graduates from the country’s tertiary institutions.
“I have been president before and I know that our economy is not turning out jobs as we are turning out young people from our educational institutions”, he said
The former president noted that the solution to the unemployment problem can not be solved by on government.
“The solution does not lie in one person’s head; that is why I have always said that we are willing as a party to join the ruling party and let’s have a high level summit on job creation to see how we can come out with a communique on what successive government must do to make sure our young people can get jobs to do so that we can grow the economy faster and make sure that our people live in decency and dignity", he said

The youth will loose faith because the cars and houses you used to give them are not forth coming anymore. Now the government has challenged the youth with a system called 'you start' bring your innovation and skills and a start up capital to work for yourself.
Partly due to your deception and failure!
This Mahama is a big ***barred word***. I think he over drinks alcohol any time he is about to speak. He is a disgrace to the country as a former president.
Mr. Ex-president your actions are recipe for disturbances. During your lost in 2020 elections you were bold to tell Ghanaians youth to go out in their numbers and destroy properties of innocent Ghanaians just becuase you have lost an elections, DO you still believe that the youth will vote you back into power ? YOU ARE NOT A LEADER BUT INTERESTED IN IN GHANA MONIES
...and without the summit he can't propose anything? Hilarious....someone who cannot think for himself. Sad that some people n journalism will wants to force him on us.
You are a big contributor to what you are saying. After telling the youth that you are not a magician to just create jobs, you are now talking of creating jobs.
Mr former president you just told lies and you know very well that you lied. Kowhinii !!
We are losing faith because of your greediness...... The state provided you with everything to make you very comfortable as president but you took a second hand ford bribe from Kanazoe. You are a very cheap man. Your presidency was a mistake by Ghanaians and your c0rrupt NDC party.
Well said, fact is the youth are beginning to realize that politicians in Ghana are not in to serve, they struggle to win power to satisfy themselves and their families and to some extent a few friends. A time will come when Ghana will record a 30% turn out at the polls. People are going for voter ID cards not to vote but for other activities like banking and SIM card registration. Check the total number of employees on the government payroll, how many of them are political office holders, what percentage of government wages and salaries budget goes into the pockets of politicians in a year. You have a country where a few selfish people are accommodated free, free vehicle, free security, free water, free electricity, free food, fat salaries and on top of all these they take exgratia at the end of every 4 years as against a public servant who worked for 35 years and goes home with a pension which can't build a decent house. The amazing thing is that with all these free things these politicians are still looking for ways to dupe the nation by inflating contracts and all sorts of theivery. If you want to make money without working for it at all join Ghana politics. Why won't the youth including the elderly lose confidence in politicians, those you think will come and turn things round become worse after gaining power. The cocoa, gold, oil, bauxite, manganese, sea, rain, etc are becoming more of a curse than a blessing. Burkina Faso don't have a quarter of what Ghana has but they are better than us . Check the prices of goods and services in Burkina Faso and Ghana in a year and you will appreciate what am saying. Ghana's politicians can best be described as a group of people who represents nobody but themselves, nothing more, nothing less. No wonder the most attractive job in Ghana today is political office.
May be this guy has been touched by the Spirit of God and is now speaking maturely! Better for him to continue like this; admit mistakes and failures honourably instead of hypocritically and sycophantly chastising people who are trying hard to clean the gargantuan mess he created.
