The Member of Parliament for Assin Central constituency, Kennedy Agyapong has expressed disappointment in the ruling government's decision to go to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for support.
President Akufo-Addo on Friday, July 1, 2022, ordered Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta to begin formal engagements with the IMF.
In a statement signed by Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the engagement will be to invite the Fund to support an economic program put together by government and it will provide “balance of payment support as part of a broader effort to quicken Ghana’s build back in the face of challenges induced by the COVID-19 pandemic, and recently, the Russia-Ukraine crisis.”
“The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has authorised Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta to commence formal engagements with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), inviting the Fund to Support an economic program put together by the Government of Ghana,” the statement added.
This announcement has received some backlash since the NPP government while in opposition had criticized the then NDC administration for seeking help from the Fund. Apart from that, there were earlier assurance and communication from some government appointees that they will not go back there.
Speaking to this at an on-going NPP National Constituency Officers Welfare workshop at Koforidua in the Eastern Region Friday, Kennedy Agyepong said the decision to run back to the IMF will make breaking the '8' difficult.
According to him, "It is just like handing over power to NDC without a contest, straight away because of the noise we made, and I chew my own words back when I said the NDC went to IMF because of mismanagement of the economy. So if NPP is going to IMF, what am I going to say? So breaking the eight is going to be tough".
“My message to you is simple, you cannot; read my lips and I am not scared of anybody in the party, I will tell you the gospel truth, those who take you to IMF cannot break the eight. I'm very sad today when I saw the publication that we're going to the IMF. We should brace ourselves...it's only unity that will help us sail through,” he added.

Kennedy Agyapong, you told them severally but a deaf elephant doesn't hear. Am for NPP but truth be told, the party has lost credibility in the eyes and ears of Ghanaians . Nana Akuffo Addo has made John Mahama a far better alternative despite his short comings. Only a few months ago the finance minister said going to the IMF have dire consequences and that we have the resources , the capacity and that Ghanaians are a proud people. Now that his man has asked him to go to the IMF, going by what he said it means Ghana has no resources, no capacity, and we are no longer a proud people, interesting . I pity my friend Bawumia. What will he say again, Mahama must be laughing loudly. Late Albert Adu Boahen and former president Kufuor worked tirelessly to make the NPP attractive. The fact that Akuffo Addo led with 49% in the first round of the 2008 elections meant NPP was still the popular choice of Ghanaians thanks to president Kufuor and his appointee who never for once left the NPP behind. They moved the party along while in government . Today NDC supporters are not laughing , NPP supporters are are downhearted , party enthusiasm is at an all time low due to neglect . Why will anybody bank his hopes on a tax that can easily be avoided . If i don't send money through my mobile wallet i won't pay E-levy, it's that simple. You have succeeded in dragging the horse to the river side, why can't you force it to drink. So the cocoa, gold, timber, bauxite, two giant harbors, crude oil , arable lands have all of a sudden become curses rather than a blessing. 2015-IMF, 2022-IMF. The managemenof IMF will ask , GHANA, you again? It's like in Ghana ,politicians don't know shame, if they know shame they can't stand in front of people again. The people are fed up too, so when they speak nobody listens, those who have time to listen see and hear fraudsters and conmen speaking. Big English, V8, exgratia, awarding contracts to themselves , foreign travels , per diem, that's all they know. When you see them pushing for a particular project or program, it's because of the personal benefits in there not because of the people. Ghanaians now know that politics in Ghana means lies, create, loot and share, inflated contracts, greed, selfishness, crooks, . NPP / NDC twins disgracing Ghana around the globe. They are all the same.
