Prof Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, National Chairman aspirant of the ruling New Patriotic Patriotic Party (NPP), has promised to recognise members' commitment to the party when he's elected.

"The party has done well for me but for the party, I would have retired as a professor. Given the crisis the party is going through I have volunteered myself to help. I believe in times of crisis, you need all the help you can get . . . I want to give back to the party what they've given to me. I'll foster unity, discipline and commitment," he said.

Speaking to the media, the former Education Minister says he will prioritize the welfare of members especially those who are retiring after serving in various offices.

Recalling how internal squabbles led to the party’s defeat in 2008 and subsequently a fall in the number of seats in Parliament in 2020, Prof Ameyaw-Akumfi asked the party to put everything aside and be united more than ever before.

He said if the party doesn’t stay united, especially after the election, they should forget about 'breaking the 8'.

"137/137 (in Parliament) is an experience NPP will never forget. Disunity in this era will be a disaster . . . it is up to us to remain united," he added.

I May Not Look Radical but...

Meanwhile, he has responded to critics who think he's not radical and hence not fit for the chairmanship position.

"In UCC I was so radical . . . when you see quiet people don't think that's how they are; mine is based on principle. You won't find me hurling insults at people or fighting but when it comes to making sure that the right things are done, you can count on me. Why should people think that politics is all bugabuga".

Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi will compete with other candidates like; Stephen Asamoah Boateng (Asabee), Sammy Crabbe, Stephen Ntim, and others in the championship race at the party's national delegate conference which will be held on Friday, July 15 to Saturday, July 16.
