The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, last Friday said he still does not understand the decision by the government to withdraw the military protection to his office, as the “third highest person” in Ghana.
He said due to the baffling development, he had been compelled to manage things on “my own”.
He recalled that the same treatment was meted out to him when he was the Second Deputy Speaker.
“I now have been elected as Speaker, which is a higher position, and the same President says I am not entitled to military attaché but the others are entitled,” he said.
‘I’m very, very secure’
Interacting with members of the Parliamentary Press Corps in Parliament last Friday (October 28, 2022), Mr Bagbin said “If you go to his Excellency’s office, you may count getting to about 200 military and the Vice President definitely has access to some.
“I, following, I am not entitled but the Chief Justice who is after me has four military, ministers have their own and each Supreme Court judge has two military and as for the Chairman of the Electoral Commission, that is a battalion.
“My friend, the Minister of National Security is entitled to military and my brothers in Interior and Defence ministries both have and the Attorney-General and the Minister of Justice have (their) own. The same with the Minister of Finance but the Speaker is not entitled and this is Ghana’s unique democracy,” he said, adding that
“But do not worry as I am very, very secure.”
The Speaker expressed concern when a member of the press corps asked him how he felt with the decision by the government to pull out the military attaché to his office.
In January 2022, the Chief of Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces withdrew the military personnel attached to the Office of the Speaker of Parliament, effective January 14.
In a statement issued on January 11, 2022, Major General, N. P. Andoh, said the four officers were attached to the office “without proper procedure.”

Your Police dispatch driver Kaakyire who was on official duty to escort you to your home town died in your duty, he left behind a wife and very little kids. You didnt even attend his funeral and you want more security detail. You guys are the ones they call extraordinary Ghanaians. All of us are ordinary Ghanaians. All you guys pretend you love the country. In times like these you should also be asking that your salaries be cut by 40% to save the national purse. Anaa as "number 2" you are entitled. Akokora bone
This man is making too much noise these days. Go and stand to be the president and stop this ***barred word***. He should stop insulting the police.
Mr speaker!God is the ultimate protector. Just ensure you relate well with anyone you meet. I see police or military protection as temporal. We saw military and police personnel offering protection for political appointees and other personalities in the past. Today because some of those people are no longer in power the military and police guards have been withdrawn, so what happens to them now. If means anybody who had issues with any of them can easily attack or harm that person. This is the more reason why people in such positions must do well not to offend or abuse those under you when you hard power because time changes. I also know of some personalities who are entitled to police and military guards but they don't move with them, they only move with their drivers. I don't know of any former minister from Nkrumah to Mahama who moves with state security currently, just ensure you laise well with who ever comes your way and you will be safe whether in government or out side government or power. Am told you are a typical dagaati man so don't fear, you are 65 years now so 65 harmattans, wey thing you no see before.Dont be afraid, God is with you.
This is what we need now as a nation? Greedy a$$holes
Someone should ask this our sensible speaker that the whole country do not understand why an MP can absent herself from her parliamentary and ministerial duties and still be shielded and be paid. A class 2 pupil asked me when I visited my village. Let him provide an answer and we will answer his question.
Ah Bagbin, you're being very petty here. What does the law entitle you to? Are you being given less? Spoilt child!
I think our Speaker needs some psychiatric help
