The Ashanti regional branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is targeting 85 percent of votes in the region in the December polls, the running mate of the flag bearer of the party, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has said.
That, he said, would set the pace for the party’s victory on December 7, 2024.
In the 2020 presidential election, the NPP polled 1,793,773, representing 71.64, while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had 652,962, representing 26.08 percent.
In the 2016 election, the NPP garnered 1,646,949 votes, representing 76.27 percent as against the NDC’s 497,242, representing 23.03 percent, while in the 2012 presidential election, the NPP had 1,531,152, representing 70.86 percent with the NDC garnering 612,616, representing 28.35 percent.
Although the Ashanti Region remains the New Patriotic Party’s stronghold, its highest percentage attained in a general election is 76.2 percent.
Speaking at the official launch of the Ashanti Regional 'Campaign Working Committees & Women's Conference' at the dome of the Rattray Park in Kumasi last Sunday, Dr Opoku Prempeh, said the works of the party were a testimony to a predicted overwhelming victory this December and that with the solid foundation that Nana Akufo-Addo had laid that would set rolling Dr Bawumia's government, " there is no way voters would choose darkness against light".
Supporters were clad in blue-red-white attires and a well-attended event with some party bigwigs such as the General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong; the National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye; the Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, and the Member of Parliament for Suame, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, as well as the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, the Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako and Kwabena Adjei Agyapong, all present.
Performance
Dr Opoku Prempeh reiterated that the Akufo-Addo-led administration had outperformed all previous governments in Ghana’s history.
He highlighted the numerous achievements of the government across various sectors, urging party faithful to rally behind the NPP under Bawumia to secure victory in the 2024 general election.
“No administration has governed the country and commenced the construction of 111 hospitals. No government in this country has built schools like Nana Addo Dankwa-Akufo-Addo has done. No government has established universities like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has done,” he said.
Strategies
On his part, Mr Antwi-Boasiako said the party would embark on door-to-door campaigning not only to attain the 85 percent votes but to win all parliamentary seats in the region.
“Our target to win all the 47 constituencies is still in motion. We will have to deliver it. The running mate has also given us an 85 percent target, which should be done as well”, he said.
The Chairman of the NPP Manifesto Committee, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said the attainment of this objective was largely dependent on the organization units of the party.
He said with a good structure, party members could develop an effective door-to-door campaign to touch base with the NPP’s message.
“It is good to aspire higher, if we look at our performance in the past four elections, our best has been around 76 percent. We will have to ignite the organizational units of the party.
That is the only means to reach the target. Our polling station agents have not been to the homes of people after the previous elections”, he added.
