Actress and Filmmaker Yvonne Nelson has reacted to what she describes as “disappointing comments” by Politician and Lawyer, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko.
Gabby Otchere-Darko who is a very influential member of the ruling New Patriotic PartyNPP) party and cousin of President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo had said in a social media post that the Ghanaian movie industry is being unproductive.
According to Gabby, he took time to watch 10 random Ghanaian movies and he was very disappointed after watching.
He wrote: “I took my time to watch randomly ten Ghanaian movies and never felt so disappointed. It brought home to me one major deficiency in our development. The apparent lack of deliberate consciousness on the part of the creative industry in the development conversation.
The presence of the creative industry appears at best peripheral in Ghana’s development narrative. Our movies, our songs, our arts, by and large, do not impactfully plug into a greater development agenda.
Hollywood, for the best part of a century, has been deliberately used by America to push successfully American cultural “supremacy” agenda; it has been used as an effective instrument of military or economic indoctrination.
But, what has been the underlying consciousness behind our creative industry, if any? What role, for instance, can actors in the creative industry play to define and realize this whole important concept of moving Ghana Beyond Aid? We must elevate consciousness in Ghana if we are serious about winning”.
However, actress Yvonne Nelson didn’t take kindly to the comment and she has reacted with a couple of tweets.
She had this reply: “Kumawood has created jobs for so many people! It has Put smiles on a lot of faces in our country! Your judgement is just so low! Disappointing!”
She was not done, she ‘kicked’ him more:
“Hello @GabbyDarko is your interview on peacefm online real?? If it is I’m also disappointed! A few of us are pushing really hard for this industry! Since our leaders have also totally abandoned the industry, we contribute too, just like nurses,doctors..etc”
She went on: “How do you even compare Hollywood to our industry! It’s like comparing our economy to theirs! Leadership!!!!! We need structures in place and some encouragement not this! What do we do when TV networks get cheaper content from India and Latin America?” she schooled Gabby.

So this stomach NPP supporters don't understand simple English wants to explain to Yvonne what Gabby actually meant? So funny! When she held protest against dumsor we all supported her. In the same vain, when she is taking to to school your Gabby, support her and learn as well.
Ms Nelson got it wrong am very sure she did not listen to Gabby herself. Please Ms Nelson take your time next time and digest what someone says before throwing in your counter whatever....
All NPP functionaries including President, Vice, ministers, deputies, dces, mces, families and NANA YAA OFORI ATTA have all grown FAT FAT FAT
Was it not the reason why Akuffo Addo's daughter was given employment in the creative industry to improve the system?
I DON'T KNOW IF YVONNE HAS LISTENED TO WHAT GABBY SAID OR SOMEONE LISTENED AND TOLD HER.YVONNE HAS GOTTEN IT WRONG TOTALLY.
you see the thing with this NPP supporters. Just like the people they support they know all. Makes noise about someone else being incompetent and not having the men but what competency have they showed? You point this out and they throw free SHS in your face. In Nana's own word is it free SHS we go chop?. What have you done for the industry since you came to power? mention 1. Same people willing to hade over our broadcasting right to the Chiness is here talking about Ghana beyond aid. You are the only ones who believe in your "9six" rhetoric. If governance was about promises and rhetoric Nana would be the best.
See them in tune....as always ...apuu. Development is not coming anywhere till we abandon this our weak way of thinking and our fake kissing of the ***barred word***. Grow! Ghana Grow!
Yvonne, I admire you but this time, you are wrong. Part of what Gabby wrote was for the industry not against it.
Yes, @ Ekua, Yvonne got it all wrong. Gabby's comments were on projecting our cultural identity to anchor our development progress. Please note, that 'cultural identity' is a heavily loaded phrase. Essentially, as Ghanaians, who are we? How do we define our values and project same? Do our values underlie our developmental pursuits? These are but few of the benchmark-criteria I understood Gabby's comments as missing in the movies he watched.
Dont understand Yvonne's angel of argument; the man watched 10 random movies and found a deficiency in our Creative Arts Industry. Questions are: 1. Is he entitled to critique the industry and not an individual? 2. Is there really a deficiency in our creative Arts Industry. Remarks: At times you watch a GH movie and begin to ask million question like... are we in this 21st Century ?
