Newly appointed ambassador for Ghana’s 2014 World Cup campaign, Shatta Wale, has promised to raise GH¢1million to support efforts by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MOYS) to send fans to Brazil to watch the tournament.
The controversial dancehall artiste made the pledge last Wednesday in Accra after he was appointed an ambassador for the FIFA World Cup, along with 15 other prominent personalities, including former footballers, retired boxers, actors and musicians.
Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the reigning Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) Artiste of the Year said: “There are a couple of initiatives I am going to introduce that will raise GH¢1 million to support the Ministry of Youth and Sports’ effort to send fans to the World Cup in Brazil.
“I am going to have two autograph signings at the Accra Mall and at the Accra Stadium on dates that will be announced to the general public. Fans will pay a token for that purpose, and I will urge all my fans to text SCORE to 1474 on all networks to support the effort,” he added.
The leader of the Shatta Movement has also coined a new phrase for his fundraising effort called Soccer Movement (SM).
Other ambassadors introduced at the ceremony held at the Labadi Beach Hotel included boxing legend, Azumah Nelson, former Black Stars captains, Stephen Appiah and Abedi Pele, and showbiz stars Becca, Grace Ashie and John Dumelo.
The event was also used to launch the official website—www.ghanatobrazil2014.com — and mobile application.
