Hugh Masakela Rocks Accra Tonight

Hugh Masakela, the gifted South African performer, under the auspices of Global Media Alliance, will perform live at the State House tonight, Saturday, November 19.

The night will witness historic performances from Hugh Masekela and some selected renowned Ghanaian artistes such as king of burger highlife George Darko, Pat Thomas and the sultry songstress Efya.

Masakela is expected to perform most of his favourite hit songs during his three -hour performance on stage.

Hugh Masakela is one of those rare, once-in-a-life-time artistes who define eras with their gift. Among the musicians who can confidently boast to have shaped music on the continent, even globally, Hugh Masakela will stand shoulder high. But Hugh is not the kind who’s wont to boast; at least he chooses to let his musical performances rather do the talking for him.

That is why at an unbelievable age of 73 and after more than a half-century of doing music, Mr. Masakela still travels the world, showing why even Marvin Gaye, Harry Belafonte and Fela Kuti treated his talent with reverence.

But if Hugh Masakela still performs, it’s also because the demand for his shows is still as strong as when he dazzled South Africans with his memorable trumpet-playing and powerful voice in the 60s.

Masakela has lived the history of South Africa and Africa as a whole.

Born in April 1939, he grew up in a country where the apartheid regime was growing stronger and more shameless. But he used his gifts throughout his life to fight the scourge of racism and discrimination in his country. Masakela, who was already doing the trumpet and leading a boys band in his teens, became a national sensation with his group Jazz Epistles by his twenties. Jazz Epistles travelled South Africa, thrilling fans with record-breaking live performances.

Hugh has inspired millions around the world with his powerful music. Today, Ghanaians will be treated to the best of this living legend.
