Maxwell Konadu concedes he was running a high risk when accepting to be coach of Ghana Premier League giants Asante Kotoko.

The ex Ghana striker who took over from Serbian Bogdan Korak at the beginning of the season is well on his way to leading the Kumasi-based club to their first Premier League title in four years.

Victory over arc rivals Hearts of Oak on Sunday extended Kotoko’s lead to 12 points at the summit of the league table with six games to go.

But the 39-year-old says he felt not quite ripe enough at the time he was taking over the Ghanaian giants.

“I read so many books and I came to realise that in this business if you don’t take such risks you can’t succeed,” he said in a lengthy interview with GHANAsoccernet.com.

“You have to be bold and take a risk and then if you succeed that is when you can even call yourself a good coach.

“Other than that you say it is not my time, it is not my time.

“I had the opportunity to come here last year but I felt I was not matured enough and that I needed a year to prepare for the big stage.

“And even when I came here it was not in the capacity of a head coach and when the opportunity came I said why not.”

Konadu went on to reveal his surprise at the time when asked to take over the team following the sacking of Bogdan Korak.

“Yes I was surprised because I didn’t know they will sack that coach when I first came here.

“I think he did very well only that when Nania beat us in the FA Cup things started going bad for Bogdan Korak.

“And so when Dr (Sarpong) called to tell me he wanted me to be coach of Asante Kotoko, I knew it was going to be tough but I said well, I can do it.

“Initially I wasn’t feeling for it because it wasn’t on my mind to be head coach I just prepared myself to assist Korak the best way I could but all of a sudden things started going bad.

“And I couldn’t turn the club down and tell them no I wasn’t ready and that they should get me a head coach.

“So I said I will do it and that I didn’t fear I was going to fail.”
