Christian Atu became the third Ghanaian to have his Champions League dream crashed after FC Porto were kicked out of the competition by Malaga on Wednesday.
The 21-year-old came on in the 70th minute to replace Alex Sandro but was unable to help much as his team were beaten 2-0 by the Spanish club.
Goals from the impressive Isco and Roque Santa Cruz in the 43rd and 77th minute respectively saw Porto’s dream of reclaiming the prestigious title they won in 2004 fizzle out in thin air.
Atsu thus becomes the third Ghanaian player behind Sulley Muntari and Kevin-Prince Boateng to have faced a similar disappointment in this year’s competition.
There however remain two Ghanaian players; Michael Essien and Kwadwo Asamoah who still have their European dreams intact with Real Madrid and Juventus progressing to the quarter finals.
Atsu was only making his debut in the Champions League and will certainly profit from the experience gathered despite Porto’s campaign going up in smoke.
