Ex Ghana striker Tony Yeboah has dismissed talks of a lowered expectation for the Black Stars ahead of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
The GFA say they only expect the Black Stars to ‘just do well’ at next year’s event following the appointment of former Chelsea boss Avram Grant as the new head coach.
According to the GFA, the proximity of Grant’s appointment to the Nations Cup in Equatorial Guinea makes it difficult to expect success.
But former Ghana striker Tony Yeboah insists the new coach must be tasked to win the competition despite his relative short time with the side by the time the competition kicks off in January.
“I disagree to the lowered expectation on the Black Stars team for the Nations Cup,” the former Hamburg star told Peace FM.
“The rationale that the coach will not have enough time with the team and that he should just go and do well with the side for me doesn’t hold.
“There are coaches who are fired within the first six months of their contracts for non-performance.
“This is the Nations Cup and Ghana is strong as we are, are always expected to win it.
“So the new coach must go for the trophy.”
Ghana have not won an African title in over three decades and will be hoping to end the trophy drought in Equatorial Guinea.
But the team’s relatively poor form in recent times doesn’t inspire enough confidence to lay claim to the Nations Cup.
