Former Black Stars skipper, Asamoah Gyan has asked football fans to respect footballers for the work they do.
Baby Jet as he is popularly called reacting to the demise of Christian Atsu in an interview on Peace FM's Midday news questioned why people criticize footballers for taking "taxpayers" money when they are only being paid for work they've done.
"This is the time some Ghanaians and people all over the world have to respect our job . . . for all these years all we hear is taxpayers' money, this and that, but they forget that for every profession you get paid. You don't know the risk we go through . . . we put our lives on the line. Look at someone who takes care of orphanages and so on, people depend on him; look at what has happened, he was trying to make a living and so this is the time people have to respect us a lot. The disrespect is too much. . . We risk our lives . . . we also go through a lot . . . this is an example for everybody, I'm in pain this situation has happened but this is a natural disaster, it shouldn't have happened like that, but life goes on so whatever we can do to support the family in everything we will do it . . ." he lamented.
Meanwhile, Asamoah Gyan says he intends to organise a football match to raise money for the family of Christian Atsu.

I alwyas knew this guy lacks sense. W3 Gymie dodo eii. What ever Atsu was doing was for his personal interest. Doctors, engineers, teachers, cleaners were among the dead but who has complained of lack of respect for the job. I wonder how you managed to captain the black stars with this unintelligence. Eiii we3 gyi=mie dodo ahba
This statement is below the belt Asamoah. The people that died have varying professions or carriers which might include masons ,teachers, plumbers accountants etc. Should Accountants say this is the time to respect their job or the Masons or the Teachers or the Plumbers. What happened was a natural disaster
This is a very childish statement to make by asamoah gyan, we are all mourning and so its not time to milk it. You have been lucky to have amass wealth in football that you are enjoying, a teacher has worked over thirty years but cant afford your house door. We all at risk anytime we step out or even in bed. Next joke.
That is a very lame statement from a respected player of the national team. Accidents are accidents, and we are all at risk everyday of our lives. Some leave home to work and never return. Some get to work and encounter fatal situations. So for him to make such a blanket statement leaves a lot to be desired
It will be wrong for you to say Ghanaians don't respect their sports men and women. Nobody can say Ghanaians don't have respect for the likes of Baba Yara, Ibrahim Sunday, Malik Jabir, George Alhassan, Papa Arko, Addae Kyenkyenhene, George Lamptey, ABEDI PELE, Azumah Nelson, Mohammed Choo , Abukari Damba etc. These are people who distinguished themselves very well in their days. Respect is a give and take affiar , if you respect others, they will reciprocate, it's that simple. If you go for a national or international tournament and all we here is demands for money , there and then you lose your respect. In Brazil 2014 you and your colleagues demanded 100,000.00 dollars each. The money was given to each and everyone of you. Now tell us the results you brought home? Tell us. If your output does not measure what you demand people have the right to question. Christian Atsu did not enjoy his earnings alone, he assisted the less privileged in society, that's why everybody was concerned about his safety. So learn from the concerns people had for him and follow his example if you want to be respected. You give, you take, you don't give, you don't take It's that simple.
Every Job MUST be respected. Just like the PARTS OF THE BODY, every part no matter how little or insignificant is necessary and must be respected. People will also give respect to whom respect is due, so Asamoah Gyan, how you carry yourself & your profession also matter. Rest in Peace, Christian Atsu.
