Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah had a vision to industrialise Ghana’s economy and identified the Integrated Aluminium Industry (IAI) as a good starting point. With an operating bauxite mine in Awaso and the establishment of the VALCO smelter by Kaiser Aluminium of the United States of America, the IAI dream was on its way to becoming a reality. The building of the Akosombo Dam, primarily, to provide cheap and reliable power to VALCO with the excess energy to power other industrial projects provided an impetus to Nkrumah’s industrialisation drive.
