Anglogold Ashanti Launches New Safety Initiative

AngloGold Ashanti, a mining company at Obuasi in Ashanti Region, has launched a new safety initiative dubbed, ��Boa me na me mmoa wo��, aimed at fostering co-operation, interdependence and helping each other in the workplaces, especially when it comes to health and safety. Employees of the mining company would be using their mobile telephones with a special code to communicate with the management to instil passion, ensures individual commitment and responsibility and to boost employee morale for a positive health and safety culture. The new initiative is expected to reinforce the company�s values and vision and reminds managers about their role in changing Obuasi safety culture, create linkages to safety transformation. According to Mr. Isaac Mate, Head of Safety, Health and Environment of AngloGold Ashanti, said the concept of the initiative was that hazards and risks would be understood and managed to ensure safety at the workplace. He stressed �we value our people, and want to protect each and every one from harm, because we all know the pain that injuries and fatalities cause for individuals and entire communities.� Mr. Mate, in the company of the Chief Executive Officer of the Mining Company, Mark Cutifani, jointly launched the initiative at Obuasi. The Head of Safety, Health and Environment said the mining company was poised to be a first class one and therefore, urged the workforce to change their ways of doing things and co-operate with one another. Mr. Cutifani on his part said the mining company sought to create a culture that promoted improvement and value creation, while building a work environment that motivated individuals to want to make a difference. He appealed to the management and all workers to strengthen the relationships between them and the communities within the company�s catchment areas.
