Over 700 Doctors Graduate From Legon

A total of 754 students of the University of Ghana, Legon College of Health Sciences on Saturday graduated at the 11th congregation and swearing in ceremony. The graduants included 147 Medical Doctors, 29 Dental Surgeons, 31 Physiotherapists, 35 Radiographers and 48 Medical Laboratory Scientists. Professor E. Kweku Osam, Pro Vice Chancellor-Academic and Student Affairs said despite Universitys financial constraints, an amount of GhC1 million cedis was released to the College to construct its central administrative block. Parliament approved a loan of $359 million for the construction of a new 600 bed teaching hospital for the College in Legon, he disclosed. Professor Osam added that plans were afoot to construct a new School of Biomedical Sciences as well as a diagnostic centre and a premium hostel but called for public partnership arrangement to achieve the goal. He commended the Colleges outgoing Council Chairman, Mr. Edward Efar for his immense contribution to the Colleges development. Doctor Kwabena Oppong Asafo Adjei won the overall best student award. He explained why Doctors refused postings to rural communities especially in the Northern regions, saying, Every Doctor is patriotic but it also comes with things put in place for the Doctors to be able to serve better in terms of equipment, facilities and even the personnel there that you will be able to work with and feel comfortable. He stressed, So if you are not given your best in the district you kind of really look inferior compared to your colleagues who are in the bigger cities and they are making it in the frontiers of delivery; so I believe that we need to also develop the northern regions by making sure that we put the necessary structures in place particularly if government is able to work it, that will encourage Doctors to accept postings to the north. One of the graduants father, Alhaji Moro Adams urged Muslim parents to desist from marrying many wives and channel their resources into their childrens education. Muslim parents must forget about marrying a lot of women, chasing women and invest that money in every child boy or girl so that he or she will reach the University level. I have been advising my friends all of them if they have a child who has made it to the University level they should let me know so that I will contribute my quota to help the child gain higher academic laurels, he stated. Faculties under the University of Ghana, Legon College of Health Sciences include the School of Allied Health Sciences, School of Public Health, the Dental School, the School of Nursing, the Dental School and the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research.
