Asantehene ask students to be disciplined

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, on Friday inaugurated a three-million Ghana cedi hostel project at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), with a call on students to be disciplined and hardworking. The Asantehene, who is also Chancellor of KNSUT, asked them to concentrate on their studies and aspire for greater heights since they represented a key component of the nations human resource.. The project named the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Hostel, was funded by the students and some philanthropists. The facility, whose work commenced in 2003, is expected to accommodate about 1,000 students. It was jointly executed by Messrs Wilkado Construction Company Limited, Rekfas Limited and KNUST Construction Unit. Otumfuo Osei Tutu asked the students to obey rules of the KNUST to help them to consolidate the institutions long-standing reputation and enviable record of churning out well-behaved, God-fearing and dedicated professionals. The Asantehene asked the Students Representative Council (SRC) to ensure judicious use of students funds and to embark on more self-help projects to their own benefit . Professor William Otoo Ellis, the Vice-Chancellor, KNUST, commended the the students. for the initiative. He said with an initial student population of 915 in the 1963/64 academic year, the University had seen an astronomical increase in population as the number currently stands at about 32, 198. This had put enormous pressure on the University in respect of limited accommodation facilities with its attendant negative consequences on academic activities. Professor Otoo said the University authorities would enforce rules and regulations of the institution to the letter to ensure discipline for the progress of KNUST. Mr Philemon Laar, the KNUST SRC President, lauded his predecessors and past executives of the Council for their immense role and vision in putting up the hostel.
