Opinion leaders of Akunakope, near Asutsuare in the Dangme West District of the Greater Accra Region, have appealed to Ghanaians to desist from indiscriminate felling of trees. They advised the people to plant trees to replace those fell to restore the vegetation and forest. Mr Joseph Tetteh Lawel, Mbrantehene (chief for young men), Mr Nuel Akunarh, Abusuapanin (family head), and Mr James Nartey Akunarh, Secretary, made the appeal when the people of Akunakope Numbers One and Two met on Friday to discuss the improvement of the ecology of the area. Akunakope is a cluster of communities along the Volta River and the people are rice farmers and fishermen. Mr Tetteh Lawel, a spokesperson for the communities, called for �greening the country for the present and future generations.� He said there was the need to create awareness on the need to protect the forest from degradation, and appealed to Ghanaians to embrace tree planting, to help protect the environment.
