Amnesty International has reiterated calls for Ghana to explore alternative punishment for smaller offense other than imprisonment. According to the Director of Amnesty International UK, James Welsh, conditions in Ghana�s prisons sometimes hardens the prisoners instead of reforming them. Mr Welsh made the observations at the launch of a research report on conditions at Ghana�s prisons by amnesty international Wednesday. �There are several alternatives to prison terms � fines, community service where the person repays the offence by serving the community. We have to realize that prison is expensive and anything we can do to maintain public security in the interest of justice without resulting in prison term is something that is worthy�. The country Director of Amnesty International, Lawrence Amesu added that the report is not to apportion blames but to help improve conditions at prisons in the country.
