Ghana To Supply Gas To Benin

Ghana will soon review the power exchange agreement it has with Benin. The review has become necessary after a President Yayi Boni of Benin raised concerns about the inconsistency on the part of Ghana in meeting the terms of the agreement when he met President Mills today. Addressing the media after the meeting Deputy Minister for Energy, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini, said though Ghana has its own power challenges it will continue to support it neighbours in areas it deems necessary. Somewhere around 2007, we had contracted to supply them (Benin) with over 120 megawatts of power and are unable to do that and so they came to see how we can increase supply to them. He said what made it impossible for the country to export power to Benin was because there was a legislation that prohibited any government from exporting hydroelectric power, leaving the only option to be gas-generated electricity. Alhaji Inusah Fuseini will therefore work with the Energy Minister of Benin to finalize the necessary agreements to.
