President John Dramani Mahama says he will lay out his policy direction in the next two weeks which he said will ensure the way forward for the country. President Mahama made these comments during his first ever address to the nation after the sudden death of Prof. John Atta Mills. President Mahama in his address said Ghanaians must stay united ahead of the December elections and must eschew any action that could lead to violence and divisiveness. According to him, the best tribute to give to the memory of the late President Mills is to ensure that the country stays united and peaceful. "The best tribute we can give to the late President Mills will be to continue the flame of peace. I urge all political actors to use the death of President Mills to refocus and conduct a clean campaign". He also pledged to ensure that the elections are conducted in a peaceful and free manner. "I pledge to use all my effort to secure our collective peace and security... I will ensure we protect our unity in diversity. Let us build on the legacy left behind by the late President and those that served before him" He said Ghanaians can compete for political position in an atmosphere of decency devoid of personal attacks and vilification. President Mahama said he expects that with the support of the citizenry his government can tap the rich diverse talent of all resources available to the nation. "I am aware that there are places within this country where people lack access to the basic needs. Together we can change this. Together we will change this," he stressed. President Mahama expressed his appreciation to Ghanaians for the massive support during the funeral ceremony of the late President Mills and also thanked the Funeral Planning Committee for a good job done. He challenged the youth to take charge of the country and help erase the negativity and ensure that the country attains the greatest success which he said is within the grasp of Ghanaians. The president said the youth must believe in themselves and must have the confidence to engage in activities that will bring development to the nation. "Young men and women can each in their own way become active partners in creating a better Ghana," he averred, adding that they should take ownership of the nation and eschew any pessimistic tendencies. "Our young men and women can be active partners in the the development of the country. Everyone must take ownership of the country by erasing negativity".
