Asamoah Gyan To Be Named Ghana Captain Report

Al-Ain striker Asamoah Gyan is set to be named the new captain of Ghana, according to Footy-ghana.com. According to the report, the striker will be wearing the armband in the 2013 African Cup of Nations qualifier against Malawi in Accra and the friendly match against Liberia three days later. It said sources close to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) have hinted the 26-year-old is likely to be named the leader of the Black Stars beyond the September double header. According to the report, in attempting to convince the former Sunderland player to end his five-month international hiatus, the captaincy issue came up as a topic for discussion, although it is not clear whether that proved to be the reason for Gyans return. John Mensah, who is currently unattached, has been the captain of the Black Stars since the early retirement of Stephen Appiah after the 2012 Fifa World Cup in South Africa. Gyan, who did not play in Ghanas last game against China, despite being on the bench, has scored 28 goals in 61 appearances for the four-time African champions.
