Brutal Dad Jailed For 15 Years

A Kumasi Circuit Court presided over by Emmanuel Amoh-Yartey has sentenced one Clement Obeng, 27 and a resident of Atimatim, a suburb of Kumasi, to 15 years imprisonment subjecting his three year old biological son to severe caning to 15 years imprisonment in hard labour. The convict, a labourer and a native of Kumawu in the Ashanti Region pleaded guilty to the charge of causing harm contrary to section 69 of Act 29/60. Presenting the facts of the case to the court, Police Chief Inspector Comfort Baffour Kyei said the complainant, one Benedicta Obeng, a resident of Obuasi Mile 9 has a son with the convict but are now separated. According to the Prosecution, the complainant who was solely taking care of the victim was dismissed from her job after a short ailment and as a result could not cater for the child anymore. Due to this, the complainant then called on the convict to assist her in taking care of the boy which he obliged and demanded that the victim be sent to him at Atimatim where he is staying with his girlfriend. Prosecution continued that on September 23, 2012, the complainant called on him to find out the condition of the child and was told that the boy was sick. To the complainants utter dismay when she came to Kumasi to find out that the boy had severe bruises all over his body and a swollen face. The boy disclosed his ordeal to eh mother that his father got infuriated and punished him because he (Victim) had urinated on his bed. The convict was arrested by the Suame Police after the complainant had lodged a complainant and in his caution statement he admitted to the offence.
