Lover Boy In Police Grips

To make a living, Emmanuel Akwasi Boateng, a 47-year-old native of Ashanti Bekwai and a resident of Adom Estate, chose a risky but self-gratifying way of life. He gained numerous girlfriends with promises of love and marriage, only to jilt the ladies after laying hands on thousands of cedis under the pretence of acquiring European visas for the ladies to enable them relocate to Europe with him after marriage. According to the Adabraka District Police crime officer, DSP Ebenezer Nketiah, Emmanuel Akwasi Boateng came into the limelight when one of his former girlfriends, who worked with a microfinance company in Accra, embezzled GH6,900 and mentioned Akwasi Boateng as the one she gave the money to. Akwasi Boateng went into hiding when he realised the police were looking for him; but not for long. It was after his arrest that more former girlfriends came to the police to lodge complaints against the suspect. The former girlfriends said that they have also been defrauded by Akwasi Boateng through methods similar to the one used on his microfinance victim. A complainant who happens to be a seamstress, said she met Akwasi Boateng about a year ago and he proposed marriage to her. They co-habited for some months during which Akwasi told her he lived in the UK and that after their marriage he would send her along. He thus requested that she gave him her passport and an amount of GH4,000 to enable him process her visa. Akwasi convinced the complainant that he has secured the visa and needed GH2,500 more to purchase an air ticket for the trip. Akwasi later told the complaint that they had to postpone the trip as a result of a vision his pastor had. He later demanded GH1,500 to renew the ticket. When the seamstress asked for the date for the trip, Akwasi started giving excuses. It was only last Sunday that the victim learnt that Akwasi had been arrested and was at the Adabraka Police Station for a similar offence. A third complainant, a trader, underwent a similar experience. She has lost GH6,900 to the lover man so far. The fourth, a trader in jewellery, has also parted with GH3,500 to Akwasi. Adabraka Police records indicate that Akwasi has so far defrauded the four young women of GH18,400. The police believe that it is likely more young women have fallen victim to Akwasi. According to the fourth complaint, Akwasi was into spiritualism as he visited some juju men. She said she suspected that Akwasi operated with help from the juju men.
